Greeley, Colo -Â More than a month ago, the Northern Colorado Softball program was denied a chance to take on the Colorado State Rams due to some late February snow. Tuesday, the Bears will not only make up that contest, but they'll also play out their originally scheduled match up as well.
Scouting the Rams (18-13, 6-6 Mtn West)
- The Rams are coming off their second conference series win, after taking down San Jose State a weekend ago.
- Both Amber Nelson and Haley Hutton are averaging over .400 at the plate, with each of them starting in all 31 games for CSU.
- Colorado State has left 223 runners on the base pads in 2017, while their opponents have left just 187.
- CSU has struck out the least amount of batters in the Mountain West at 102.
- The rams rank second to last in the conference in batting average with a team total of .282.
Scouting the Bears (16-24, 4-5 Big Sky)
- After their win against Weber State on Friday, the Bears have now equaled their Big Sky win total from a season ago.Â
- Northern Colorado has hit a conference-leading 30 home runs in 2017, including nine from Jordyn Wiatrak.
- The UNC pitching staff has allowed the least amount of walks in the Big Sky Conference with 69, nine fewer than any other team.
- With 116 assists, Eric Dick leads the Big Sky Conference in the category, totalling 20 more than any other player.
- Since the beginning of conference play, the Bears have the best slugging percentage (.498) and best on base percentage (.400) in the Big Sky.
Who to Watch For
Erica Dick -Â Erica has totaled 46 hits in 2017 bringing her career total to 199. With one more hit, Dick would be just the second player in Northern Colorado history to amass 200 hits, and would be just two more away from breaking the program career record set by Melissa Marcovecchio who had 201.
Last Time Out
Northern Colorado is coming off their best conference weekend, defeating then number one in the conference, Weber State in two of three contests. It took a few late-game heroics from Jordyn Wiatrak and Kelli Kleis to lift themselves over the Wildcats in Friday's first game. On Saturday, a record-setting 29th career win from Jayme Reddacliff allowed UNC to capture the series.
Last Time vs CSU
The Rams made a trip to Greeley for the first game played under the name of Gloria Rodriguez Field back on March 7. CSU was able to walk away with the 8-5 victory. Entering Tuesday's match up, UNC holds a 5-29 record against Colorado State.
Resuming Play
Back on February 28, UNC and CSU's game was postponed in the middle of the first inning due to a blizzard that deemed the playing conditions too deplorable to continue. They'll pick up the game at 2:15pm Tuesday, with the bases loaded for Colorado State in the bottom of the first inning and nobody out.Â
Miami Kleis
In the bottom of the eighth inning during Friday's first game against Weber State, head coach Shana Easley tabbed Kelli Kleis to pinch hit for Adeline Coldiron with runners on first and second. Only 1-9 in her previous at bats in 2017, Kleis delivered a knock-out blow to the Wildcats, doubling off the wall to win the game in extra-innings.
Birthday Bash
Sophomore, Jordyn Wiatrak celebrated her birth in style this weekend. Not only did Wiatrak blast her conference-leading ninth home run on Friday, but the two-run shot in the seventh inning tied the game, giving way for a chance to win in extras.
Ground Control
The UNC pitching staff has put complete faith in their defense. Though Jayme Reddacliff and company haven't compiled many strikeouts, they lead the conference in least amount of walks and hit-by-pitches. Consequently, the Bears defense also leads the Big Sky in assists, chances and put outs.Â
You Shall Not Pass!
Adeline Coldiron has put up a wall for runners trying to steal second base. The senior leads the conference in caught stealing by a catcher with 14, six more than any other catcher in the Big Sky.
Hit List
Twenty-five times this season, a Northern Colorado batter has earned a free pass to first base on a hit-by-pitch, leading the conference. Individually, Adeline Coldiron leads the way, being hit 10 times. Coldiron also ranks in the top 100 of all NCAA softball players in hit-by-pitch per game.Â
Â
New Year New Staff
Head coach Shana Easley has hired assistant coaches, Travis Owen and Kaelene Curry over the off-season. Owen arrives from a successful Radford program and Curry makes her second stint as part of UNC's staff, arriving from Sonoma State.Â
New Kids on the Block
UNC adds three new faces to the program in 2017. Hunter Damico, Autumn Anderson and Sophia Taylor all arrive in Greeley looking to make an impact in their freshmen campaigns.
Seeing Triple
Last season, Northern Colorado and Erica Dick led the nation in triples per game by a team and by a player, respectively with .43 and .40.
Early Signing Success
UNC ventured out into four different states to sign new recruits during the early signing period in November. Natalie Joyner (Wash.), Mady Young (Kan.), Ally Steiner (Ariz.) and Emma Brockman (Ore.) will all arrive on campus next season.Â
Frequent Flyers
The Bears will spend the first month of the season traveling the Southwestern part of the United States. Tournaments in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas keep UNC busy before coming home on March 7 against Colorado State.
Record Watch
2017 could be a monumental year for Erica Dick. The senior ranks top-10 in UNC history in 10 career categories. Dick has already scored more runs than anyone in Bear history with 123 and counting.
Chasing a Legend
Head coach Shana Easley enters 2017 one win behind Jen Schunke for second all-time in UNC DI history. Easley is 26 wins from tying Linda Witt  (88) who holds the most wins in the DI era.
Recent Renovations
On top of renaming Butler-Hancock Softball Field to Gloria Rodriguez Field, UNC Softball will welcome a brand new scoreboard and backstop. Renovations to the facility continue with eyes on new dugouts as the next project.
