UNC fell to Wichita State 10-4 Wednesday afternoon.
WICHITA, Kan. – Northern Colorado baseball closed out its road trip at Wichita State Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Shockers 10-4.
How It Happened
Similar to game one of the series, Wichita State's offense struck first in the second inning. The Shockers recorded three straight hits to begin the inning, scoring the first run of the game. They went on to add on two more runs taking a 3-0 lead into the third.
Northern Colorado took advantage of WSU's pitching change to begin the fourth with hard hit balls on Codi Heuer of Wichita State. Nick Tanner began the inning with an out, before UNC's offense started to find open spots in the stands and on the field.
Evan Johnson started the hit parade for UNC with home run down the left field line to make it a 3-1 game. Cole Maltese followed up the home run from Johnson with a ground rule double to the left center gap. Jack Pauley hit the second home run of the inning for UNC when he belted a ball to right center evening up the game at three.
Johnson put the Bears in the lead in next inning, with an RBI double down the left field line to put the Bears up 4-3. The run that scored was Alex Kiel who began the fifth with a walk and moved into scoring position with his first stolen base of the year.
That lead did not last long for UNC however as Wichita State responded right away in the bottom half of the fifth. The inning began with a single and double to even the game at four. The Shockers took the lead on another single, to reclaim the lead at 5-4. WSU then did real damage in the inning when Jordan Boyer hit a grand slam just inside the left field pole to put the team up 9-4 by inning's end.
Wichita State added an insurance run to its lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Game Changer
The nine hole hitter is not usually known for his power, but Jordan Boyer proved that stereotype wrong Wednesday afternoon when he delivered the big hit of the game. He took the 0-1 pitch down the left field line hooking inside the foul pole for a grand slam to put WSU up 9-4.
Notable
- After going five games without a home run, UNC hit two in today's game. They marked the 18th and 19th home run of the season putting them with in five of last season's total of 24.
- Evan Johnson had a strong day at the plate for the Bears going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. He was a triple short of the cycle. The three hits extended his hit streak to 11 games.
- Only one Bear has a longer hit streak than Johnson, in teammate Cole Maltese who extended his to 15 games Wednesday.
What's Next?
UNC returns home for one last tune up before WAC play begins next weekend. The Bears will host the Regis Rangers at 2 pm at Jackson Field.
