Northern Colorado baseball fell 11-5 to Wichita State thanks to a seven run second inning
WICHITA, Kan. – A big second inning for Wichita State Tuesday afternoon was too much for Northern Colorado baseball to overcome as they fell to the Shockers 11-5.
How it Happened
After the first 10 batters of the game were retired in order, Wichita State's offense woke up in a big way. A walk by Dayton Dugas began the seven run rally for WSU. In all, they scored seven runs on seven hits, no errors, a walk and a hit batter. Wichita State had a pair of triples in the big inning.
WSU hit its third triple of the game in the bottom half of the third to make it an 8-0 game and entered the fourth up 9-0 before UNC scored its first run of the game, trying to battle back.
Cole Maltese started the rally for UNC with a full count walk, scoring on Brett Minnick's two-out double down the third base line. Minnick came home later on in the inning thanks to a passed ball after runners moved to the corners on Nick Tanner's single.
The Bears cut the lead to six in the sixth when Evan Johnson and Cole Maltese hit a double and single, respectively, to begin the inning. With runners on the corners Jack Pauley hit a sacrifice fly to left making it a 9-3 game. The six runs was as close as Northern Colorado would get in the game though.
The Shockers added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, while UNC added on two in the bottom of the eighth. The final two Bears runs came on a Minnick single and Alex Kiel bases loaded walk.
Game Changer
Dayton Dugas got things started for Wichita State in its seven-run second inning with a walk, his first of two on the day. He also singled in the inning to bring home a run. For the game he went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored, two RBI and a pair of walks to stuff the stat sheet.
Notable
- Triples were a key for Wichita State in defeating UNC recording three in the game and five extra base hits for the game. The Bears had a pair of extra base hits, both being doubles.
- Brett Minnick and Cole Maltese each recorded two hit games. They almost had identical lines going 2-for-4 with a run scored, but Minnick also brought home a run.
- Issac Bracken has made two appearances on the mound for Northern Colorado now this season, not allowing a walk yet, while striking out six.
Quotable
Head Coach Carl Iwasaki"We created an uphill battle for us with the tough, big second hitting by Wichita State. Our guys didn't give in though and won three of the remaining six frames. We will have to come back tomorrow and play solid defense along with have a quality outing from our starter Sam Leach to pick up the win against a tough Wichita State team."
What's Next?
The Bears and Shockers will finish the mid-week two game series tomorrow at 2 pm MT.
