Men's Tennis (1-4, 1-1 Big Sky)
Following their match against Montana on Friday, the Bears will play South Dakota State University on Sunday, February 12th at 5:00pm.
Last Time Out: The Bears defeated North Dakota 5-2, getting singles wins from Connor Finerty, Kyle Pease, Hayden Cramer, and Cassell King. The Bears also took two out of three matches in doubles, with wins coming at number one (Kyle Pease & Cassell King) and number two (Hayden Cramer & Agustin Lombardi).
Need to Know: The Bears last played Montana on April 8th, 2016 in Missoula.Montana won the match 6-1, the lone Bears win coming from Eric Schuermans (graduated after last season) at No. 2 singles. Junior Connor Finerty is the only player on the Bears with a winning record in singles so far this spring (3-2) but the team has fared much better in doubles competition. Junior Cassell King and freshman Kyle Pease are 4-1 playing the No. 1 doubles spot for UNC.
Good to Know: In five team matches, the Bears have been above average in singles matches that have gone to a third set, winning 4-of-6 matches of that variety.
Scouting Montana: The Grizzlies started their spring schedule with a pair of 7-0 wins in a doubleheader against Lewis-Clark State. In two team matches, the Grizzlies dropped just one set at No. 1 singles and cruised to wins in every doubles contest. Last season, Montana finished with a 9-8 overall record, 8-3 in the Big Sky Conference. They lost in the first round of the Big Sky Conference tournament to Sacramento State 4-2 last season.
Scouting South Dakota State: Although the Jackrabbits are winless (0-4) in the spring, they have faced some very difficult opponents including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Marquette. In their last match, the Jackrabbits lost a tight match 5-4 to Cardinal Stritch University. Last season, SDSU finished with a 12-12 record (1-4 conference).
Worthless Stat: The Bears last played South Dakota State in February of 2013, where they picked up a 4-3 win against the Jackrabbits, winning all three doubles matches.
