GAME 1 (PDF) | GAME 2 (PDF)
Abilene, Texas – It was a tale of two ball games Friday for Northern Colorado Softball. After cruising past the Panthers of Prairie View A&M, 9-1, UNC fell short against the host school Abilene Christian, 5-2, in the day's double-header.
GAME 1
Prairie View A&M were looking to strike first after a stolen base got the Panthers into scoring position early. However, stifling Bears defense led to a rundown between home and third base, thwarting the offensive attack just in time.
Northern Colorado then took its first turn at the dish. Erica Dick led the inning off with a walk, and while Cheyenne Talmadge struck out swinging in the next at-bat, an errant throw allowed Dick to advance all the way to third. Two batters later, Jordyn Wiatrak doubled to center field, allowing Rachel Johnson to occupy third base. Another double and a wild pitch filled out an inning where the Bears tallied three to take the early lead.
Starting pitcher, Jayme Reddacliff quieted Prairie View in the second, bringing back her offense hungry for more.
For the second time in as many innings, the Bears began the inning with a lead-off walk. Emily Holtz laid down a slap hit to third, giving UNC two runners with nobody out and the Northern Colorado home run queen at the plate. Dick would deliver, rocketing one over the fence, extending the Bears lead to 6-0.
Both teams went silent in the third and fourth innings, setting up a fifth inning that would produce the game's most runs, collectively.
Valerie Vidal, who came in to pitch in the fourth, had kept the Panther at bay. The sophomore's only mistake and only blemish came when the Prairie View lead-off hitter smacked a home run to left field, drawing them to within five.
Patient batting was again the key for a feisty Northern Colorado offense in the bottom half, however. Wiatrak led off with a walk, Autumn Anderson singled for her first hit and all of the sudden the winning run stood at the plate. The Bears' iron woman behind the plate, Adeline Coldiron, wouldn't even allow her Prairie View counterpart an attempt at catching a pitch, blasting a home run on the first pitch she saw, giving UNC their second victory of the season, 9-1.
GAME 2
Erica Dick kicked off UNC's second game in the same manner as the first, with a lead-off walk. However, second base was as far as her and Emily Holtz would be allowed to advance by the Abilene Christian defense.
The Wildcats earned themselves a base runner on a two-out walk in the bottom half of the opening frame, but the Bear's defense proved up to the task, keeping the runner stranded at first.
Starting pitchers, Jayme Reddacliff and Sidney Holman then locked themselves in a pitcher's duel. From the second through the top of the fourth innings, both used their arm strength and defense to keep zero's on the scoreboard for the opposing sides.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Wildcats finally broke the stalemate. A lead-off triple spelled early trouble for Northern Colorado. Not only did the lead off runner cross the plate, but so would three more with the final three scored as unearned.
Trouble reared its ugly head once again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two walks and a hit by pitch quickly loaded Wildcats on all the bases. Lauren Paige came in relief for Kelli Kleis, who had come on in the fourth inning for Reddacliff, and managed to squeeze herself out of a major jam, allowing only one run to cross the plate.
After a silent sixth inning, Northern Colorado needed its bats to awaken in hopes of a late game rally. Another lead-off walk gave the Bears an early base runner. Then stepped up Jordyn Wiatrak. The sophomore launched a towering home run that lessened the Wildcat advantage to three. UNC's rally was halted short, however, leaving them with a 1-1 record on the afternoon.

IN THEIR WORDS
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"Overall on the day I was proud of our battle in both games, as that's something we've been focusing on. Now it's about cleaning up the mistakes. We had good timing at the plate against Prairie View and limited our walks in the circle with good defense."
"Against Abilene we wanted to be better all around and our main takeaways from that game were making better and more confident plays on defense, and making better adjustments earlier in the count against their pitcher who was getting ahead well against us."
Â
We're looking forward to facing both teams again tomorrow."
