POCATELLO, Idaho – Northern Colorado softball delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday afternoon, rolling past Weber State 12-3 in run-rule fashion to remain alive in the Big Sky Tournament.
After Weber State struck first with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the first inning, the Bears responded in the bottom half. Northern Colorado capitalized with patience at the plate and a series of hit-by-pitches to load the bases before Baylie Kakallis delivered a clutch three-run double into the gap, highlighting a four-run inning that quickly swung momentum in UNC's favor.
The Bears continued to apply pressure in the second, erupting for another four-run frame to build an 8-2 lead. Katie Walling sparked the rally with a two-RBI double to left center, while Amailee Morales followed with an RBI double of her own. Krista Francia added to the surge with an RBI single down the line, capping a relentless offensive stretch.
Weber State managed to push across a run in the fourth inning, but Northern Colorado answered right back with its most decisive blow of the game. After loading the bases once again, pinch hitter Emma Harrington stepped in and crushed a grand slam to deep center field, extending the lead to 12-3 and putting the run-rule into motion.
In the circle, Grace Algrim delivered a composed and efficient outing, going all five innings while allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out four and kept Weber State from stringing together sustained rallies, earning her seventh win of the season.
Northern Colorado's offense was both aggressive, scoring 12 runs on eight hits while drawing four walks and taking advantage of four hit-by-pitches. Kakallis finished with three RBIs, Harrington drove in four with her grand slam, and Walling added two RBI's and two runs scored in a well-rounded team effort.
ON DECK: With the victory, the Bears extend their postseason run and will now prepare to face Montana in their next elimination game as they look to keep their momentum rolling. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. MDT at Miller Ranch Stadium.
