UNC baseball fell to San Francisco in game one of its doubleheader, before seeing the second game suspended
Game 1
How It Happened
Aaron Hamilton struggled with his command early and it came back to hurt him. He walked the first two USF hitters of the game, which would score on a two-RBI single by Allen Smoot to left center. Smoot ended up scoring before the inning, ended giving the Dons an early 3-0 lead.
The Bears offense evened the game up in the top half of the second, when Evan Johnson hit a solo home run to left field, his first career hit as a Bear. It was a three-run shot after Jack Pauly doubled to begin the inning and Brett Minnick walked.
San Francisco did not allow the game to stay tied for long as Aaron Ping walked to begin the bottom of the second, and scored on a Matt Sinatro triple to right center making it a 4-3 game.
USF proceeded to break the game open in the bottom half of the third with six runs scored. They did so by recording five hits, all singles, and four walks, batting around in the inning. The six runs put San Francisco up 10-3.
Tyler Yamaguchi moved Northern Colorado within six in the fourth when he pulled his first career home run to left field. The long ball was a solo shot and the fifth dinger of the season for UNC.
The Dons added on an insurance run in the fifth, before both teams were shut down offensively the rest of the way.
Game Changer
Northern Colorado's pitchers struggled with command, giving up 11 walks to San Francisco, along with hitting four batters. Those free passes came back to hurt UNC as two of them scored, but three others helped push runs across. Those extra plate appearances became key for USF in the third inning when they put a six spot on UNC.
Game 2
How It Happened
Northern Colorado's starting pitcher Sam Leach came out and shut down the Dons early on, sitting down the first six batters he faced.
When San Francisco had a base runner reach they took advantage as Brady Bates scored after he led off with an infield single. Following a sacrifice bunt, Bates gave USF a 1-0 when he came across on Tyler Villaroman's single up the middle.
UNC responded right away though, scoring a pair in the top of the fourth. Jack Pauley started the rally with a one out walk. In the next at-bat, Brett Minnick doubled to left field scoring Pauley. Tyler Yamaguchi gave the Bears their first lead in the series since the first game with a two out single to score Minnick.
Leach continued to pitch well for Northern Colorado, going five strong innings, allowing just the one run and giving up no walks before handing the ball over to Jacob Howard.
Howard pitched well for UNC too, going four strong innings allowing just one run. The Bears offense threatened in the sixth inning, but that was it.
The teams were about to head to extra innings, but the lack of daylight and no lights at Bennedetti Field, suspended the game.
Game Changer
The strong pitching of Sam Leach and Jacob Howard were keys for Northern Colorado after using 15 pitchers in the first three games of the series. Leach and Howard combined to go nine innings allowing just two runs on eight hits with four strike outs and no walks.
Notables
- Brett Minnick had a strong opening series for UNC, and had arguably his best performance of the weekend in the second game going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. One of his two hits was a double.
- Zach Heath and Billy Moreland had solid appearances out of the pen for the Bears in game one. Heath went 3.0 innings strong, the longest of any UNC pitcher, allowing just one run that was unearned. Meanwhile, Moreland pitched the eighth for Northern Colorado, his college debut, putting the Dons down in order including a pair of strike outs.
- In the series, nine of the Bears 15 runs came off of home runs.
Quotable
Head Coach Carl Iwasaki
"Both Sam and Jacob gave us a chance to win in game two today with their control and command of pitches. It is the type of executions we like to see from our pitchers."
What's Next?
UNC and USF will finish up the final game of the series on Tuesday at 2 pm MT at San Francisco's field. Following that game the Bears scheduled game against San Francisco State will take place also at USF's field.
