GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado (8-16, 4-9 Big Sky) dropped its third straight game on Saturday afternoon to Eastern Washington (17-9, 9-4 Big Sky) 70-44.
How It Happened:
Senior forward, Jon'te Dotson knocked down a corner three less than a minute into the game to give UNC it's only lead for the afternoon at 3-0.
After a quick jumper from junior guard, DJ Miles, the Bears went close to seven minutes without a field goal.
Fortunately for UNC, Eastern Washington also had struggles at the offensive end of the floor and the scoreboard read 11-7 with 11:50 to go until the break.
The Eagles started to find a rhythm and took a double-digit advantage (28-17) with :48 seconds to play in the half, but UNC was able to trim that lead with a make from downtown by redshirt sophomore guard, Chaz Glotta as the seconds waned off the clock.
Northern Colorado went into the break trailing EWU 28-20.
The offensive woes continued for UNC in the second half as the team went over nine minutes without a field goal.
Meanwhile, three-balls were going in from all locations on the court for the Eagles and the deficit for the Bears ballooned to 27 points (59-32) with 6:08 left in the ball game.
Unlike Thursday night, Northern Colorado was unable to surmount a comeback as Eastern Washington rode their advantage until the clock expired.
Sophomore guard, Jordan Davis and redshirt freshman guard, Jonah Radebaugh were the only two Bears to reach double figures on the afternoon.
Davis was just shy of a double-double, ending with 15 points and nine rebounds. Radebaugh recorded 10 points and hauled in four rebounds and dished out three assists in the loss.
Ty Gibson was Eastern Washington's leading scorer with a game-high 21 points.
Game Changer:
Ty Gibson made his first start of the season count for EWU. Gibson went 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and scored 15 of his game-leading 21 points in the second half to help lead the Eagles to the win in Greeley.
Key Stat:
Northern Colorado was held to 44 points on just 28% shooting for the game. Both the points and the field goal percentage were season-lows for the Bears.
In Their Words:
Head Coach, Jeff Linder:
"To be honest, I was expecting maybe a few more games like this throughout the year. When you're playing with the fifth youngest team in the country with seven scholarship players as of right now, four of them being true freshmen, for us to fight and compete like we have over the course of this season, I have nothing but the utmost respect for our guys and the direction where the program is going."
"They're a good team (Eastern Washington). I respect what they do as a program, they have good, smart players. Jacob Wiley is a heck of a player. I thought we did a good job on Wiley and [Bogdan] Bliznyuk for the most part. Give them credit, that's what an older, mature team sometimes does to a younger, inexperienced team like us."
Notables:
- Northern Colorado finished the afternoon just 3-of-21 (14.3%), including a 0-of-9 spell in the second half, from three-point range. The percentage was a season-low.
- The Bears were bested in the rebound battle by Eastern Washington 40-32
- Jordan Davis continues his consecutive games in double figures streak to 29. Davis also had a team-high nine rebounds along with three assists and three steals in the loss.
- Eastern Washington's bench outscored UNC's bench 18-9.
Up Next:
Northern Colorado will go out on its final road trip of the season, venturing to Weber State (Feb. 16) and Idaho State (Feb. 18) before ending the year with three straight home contests.
