GREELEY, Colo.—The Northern Colorado men's team makes its first trip outside of the state as they travel to Malibu, California to play Pepperdine University Friday night. The Waves come in at 1-1, while the Bears are searching for their first win of the young season.
Tip-off between the Waves and the Bears is scheduled for 8 pm Mountain Standard Time. The game will be streamed for free on TheW.tv, or fans can tune into 1310 KFKA to listen to the game or follow live on PepperdineWaves.com.
Opening Tip
• UNC is coming into the game after losing both games in the opening week of the season.
• Freshman Jalen Sanders started his first game as a Bear against UC Davis and scored 15 points. He also pulled down six boards.
• The Bears and Waves have only played each other one time previously. Pepperdine won the game 85-80 back in 1964.
• Pepperdine opened its 2017-2018 season on the road versus Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma on November 10th. OSU came out on top 78-47. The Waves then came home to beat Cal Lutheran 107-82 on November 14th.
• This will be Pepperdine's second of six games at home after the trip to OSU. After playing UNC, the Waves will host the Legends Classic Subregional.
Last Time Out
Northern Colorado fell to UC Davis 74-59. Head Coach Jeff Linder played with his starting lineup, giving Jalen Sanders the nod over Anthony Johnson. Andre Spight led the team with 20 points while Sanders put up 15 points in his starting debut. The Bears were not afraid to let it fly from behind the arc as they took 23 shots from 3. However, UNC only made six of those shots and missed all 11 in the second half.
Scouting the Waves
Pepperdine was the tale of two teams in their first two games. They only put up 47 against Oklahoma State but then couldn't miss when they played Cal Lutheran and won 107-82. Trae Berhow and Kameron Edwards led the way for the Waves, with both players averaging 12.0 points per game. Pepperdine played 12 players in each game. Their third leading scorer, Darnell Dunn, scored 18 points off the bench in the game against Cal Lutheran. The Waves also know how to get to the charity stripe. They have been there 57 times this season while their opponents have only been there 29 times.
Last Time Against Pepperdine
This is only the second meeting between these two teams. Pepperdine defeated the Bears 85-80 back in the 1964-65 season. The Waves do have one player on their roster from Colorado. Freshman Colby Ross attended Eaglecrest High School in Aurora. Ross has started both games and is averaging 8.5ppg and has a team-high 11 assists.
Record Book Watch
Jordan Davis dropped in 17 points in the first two games. He is now 83 points away from breaking the 1,000-point barrier for his UNC career. Davis needs three steals to pass Jordan Wilson (2013-2016) for 9th all-time in UNC Division I history. He also needs two assists to pass Wilson for second in Division I for the Bears.
What's Ahead
After playing Pepperdine, the Bears come home for one game and play Northern New Mexico College Tuesday, November 21st. They make a quick turnaround and head to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the Sanford Pentagon Showcase. The Bears will play three games in three days starting Friday, November 24th. Their opponents: Youngstown State, South Dakota and Southern Mississippi.
