Bears grab wins in Singles; Doubles on both days of Tournament
LARAMIE, Wyo. The University of Northern Colorado women's tennis team again found some success playing in their second invitational tournament of the fall, hosted by the the University of Wyoming. On day 1, the Bears won singles matches against Montana State with Tristen Bryant-Otake defeating Emma Podeur 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Mana Koitabashi defeated Sara Iverson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5.
Returning player Anna Battersby played the No. 1 spot for the Bears. Later in the day, Mana Koitabashi was the only winner in singles for the Bears in round five as she defeated Sarah Cheverie (Montana State) 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5. In doubles, Anna Battersby and Madeline Doherty defeated Angelina Phillippova and Enni Zander (Montana State) 6-3.
"The girls had a great tournament at the Wyoming Invite," said Bears head coach Brenda Gallegos. "Dean Clower did a nice job of organizing many matches for our players over the course of three days."
On day two of the tournament, Tristen Bryant Otake was a winner at No. 5 singles over Harsha Challa (Wyoming) 6-4, 7-5 and the Bears grabbed wins at No. 3. No. 4, and No. 5 singles over Montana State later in the day. Anna Battersby and Madeline Doherty defeated Laura Mary and Emma Podeur (Montana State) at No. 1 doubles 7-5 and Tristen Bryant-Otake and Raffa Mora teamed up to nab a victory at No. 2 over Angelina Phillipova and Annie Walker (Montana State) 6-4.
"Our players had the chance to play a lot of good matches and really made the most out of that opportunity. It was great to see everybody out there competing hard and fighting until the end of each match. We had some good wins and overall the girls are making progress in their play match by match."
The Bears continue their season with their third appearance in a tournament on October 6th at the Colorado State Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. They will then take part in the ITA Regional Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 11th to close out the fall.
