ITA's Marks End of Fall Tune-Up
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. The ITA Regional Championships offered an opportunity for the Bears to get valuable matches against high quality opponents over the weekend and has concluded, marking the end of their fall tennis schedule. The largely individual competition takes place over four days and is a bracketed tournament which is single elimination in both singles and doubles. The best players from the mountain region compete and the Bears faced some challenging first and second round opponents.
Fr. Tristen Bryant-Otake grabbed a first round win against Jr. Morgan Dickason (Weber St.) 6-1, 6-4 before falling to Jr. Anna Bogoslavets (UNLV) 6-0, 6-2. Bogoslavets played mostly No. 3 singles for UNLV last season.
Soph. Raffa Mora was defeated by Fr. Eira Tobrand (Southern Utah) 6-3, 6-4 in round one as was Fr. Madeline Doherty, who was beaten by Julia Ronney (Montana) 6-1, 6-4. In the bottom half of the singles draw, Fr. Mana Koitabashi fell to Soph. Sophia Haleas (Utah St.) 6-1, 6-0 and Fr. Carrigan Blanchard was soundly defeated by Soph. Hannah Jones (Utah St.) 6-0, 6-1.
Doubles competition featured the freshmen duo of Blanchard and Doherty, who lost in round one to Lawrence and Sagiao (Southern Utah) 8-4. Mora and Bryant-Otake teamed up to be defeated by Laskey and Jones (Air Force) 8-6, also in the first round.
The Bears resume their 2017-18 campaign with a match on January 20th in Greeley against Colorado State-Pueblo, starting their spring with eight of nine matches at home. Last year, Northern Colorado finished 8-13 overall, 5-6 in the Big Sky Conference.
