Moscow, Idaho – The Northern Colorado Women's Soccer program will look to continue its three-game winning streak Friday, as they head to Idaho to face the preseason Big Sky Conference favorite Vandals.
The Bears kicked off conference play last Friday in Ogden when they took on Weber State. The Wildcats and Mother Nature threw everything they could at Northern Colorado, but the defense anchored behind senior defender Madeline Chase and junior goalkeeper Madeline Burdick stood strong, giving the Bears their third straight victory and a 1-0 start to Big Sky play.
Friday's matchup will mark the second leg of UNC's road stand to kick of conference play in 2016. The Bears will also travel to Pocatello on Sunday to face the Bengals.
Though only members of the Big Sky Conference for two years, this week signals the seventh matchup between the Bears and the Vandals. Idaho owns the all-time series with a mark of 4-1-1.
Scouting the Opponent
-The Vandals are coming off their first Big Sky Conference loss in 2016, falling to Eastern Washington 2-1 in overtime.
-Elexis Schlossarek's four goals are good enough for third best in the Big Sky.
-Through 10 games, Idaho is averaging the second most goals scored per game at 1.5.
-Goalkeeper Torrell Stewart won Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week back in week four after a 2-0 weekend that included wins over Seattle and Boise State.
Scouting the Bears
-At 49, the Bears have taken the second most amount of corner kicks in the conference, second only to Idaho State who has taken 60.
-The Bears are one of only three teams in the conference who have committed under 100 fouls on the season (94).
-Maddie Roberts has surged into a tie for second in the Big Sky for most assists (3).
-Madeline Burdick holds the second best save percentage for goalies in the conference (.856) and the second most amount of shutouts in 2016 (4).
Penalty Kicks
Hot Potatoes
UNC's only regular season victory over the Vandals came in 2009 in a tournament in Boise, Idaho. The Bears have never beaten Idaho in Moscow in the regular season.
Conference Confrontation
The Bears are looking to keep their undefeated streak going in the Big Sky. Last season, the Bears kicked off Big Sky play with four straight victories.
Weather Warriors
After playing in near monsoon-like conditions last week in Ogden, the Bears are welcoming an expected forecast in the upper 60's with only 10% chance of participation.
Moscow Memories
The last time the Bears were in Moscow, Idaho, they won the Big Sky Conference tournament in a penalty shootout versus the Vandals.
