UNC baseball finished its weekend sweep of Grand Canyon Sunday in a 6-2 win.
GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado baseball team completed a three game sweep of Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 win. The win extends UNC's win streak to seven games and improved the team's overall record to 15-25.
How it Happened
UNC loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning, and scored first run of the game when Nick Tanner drew a walk on the full count to bring home Jacob Ek.
Dean Lawson would then crush a ball to the left field wall in the next at-bat for a bases clearing double putting the Bears up 4-0. Cole Maltese would cap off Northern Colorado's two out rally with an RBI single to left field making it a 5-0 game.
Lawson was at it again in the fourth inning with another line drive down the left field line to bring home Rob Cashel, extending the Bears lead to 6-0.
Grand Canyon would try and chip away at the Bears late in the game scoring one run each in the sixth and seventh inning, before Justin Mulvaney came in to close out the Bears victory.
Game Changing Moment
Dean Lawson was feeling good coming off a five hit game on Saturday when he came to the plate for his second at-bat on Sunday. The Bears had the bases loaded with two outs and just took a 1-0 lead. Lawson would extend the team's lead to 4-0 when he put all he had into the first pitch of the at-bat driving it to the left field wall on the fly for a double that cleared the bases.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Lawson had one heck of a weekend, following up his five hit day on Saturday with four RBIs Sunday. He was 2-for-3 on the day with a double, run scored and sacrifice bunt as well.
Grand Canyon: Leadoff hitter Thomas Lerouge was a pain in the UNC side Sunday. He went 3-for-5 at the plate, with a run scored and scoring GCU's other run. He also stole his 11th base of the year.
Notables
- Nick Tanner once again had another strong outing for UNC. He lasted 6 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on five hits while tying a career high with eight strike outs. The win improved his record to 4-1 on the year.
- Tanner also helped himself out at the plate, he was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. He also had a walk.
- With the win UNC's magic number to return to Mesa Arizona for the WAC Tournament is down to one. The Bears are currently 5.5 games ahead of CSU Bakersfield with six games left to go in the WAC season.
- Not only was this weekend the first series win for Northern Colorado over Grand Canyon in the program's history, but also the first every sweep.
- The seven-game win streak is the longest for the team since May 2013, when the team won nine straight.
Quotable
"I have just been seeing the ball well recently and made some adjustments this week and been making some good swings. I have been feeling really good in the box and was able to produce hits for the team." – Dean Lawson
"We are playing together and playing our best baseball right now. The kids are listening to me and the rest of the coaches, making good adjustments. Playing good baseball is a tradition here at Northern Colorado, we find ourselves in May. Down the stretch is important and we have some tough matches coming up." – Carl Iwasaki
What's Next?
UNC will look to keep it rolling on Tuesday when they face in-state rival Air Force on Tuesday. The Bears will be taking on the Falcons for the fourth time this season, at 3 pm in Colorado Springs.
