Northern Colorado's six run first was not enough against Sacramento State
MESA, Ariz. – An early barrage of runs by Northern Colorado wasn't enough for the Bears as they fell to Sacramento State 8-7 in the opening game of the WAC Tournament, Thursday evening.
How it Happened
Northern Colorado's bats came out hot to start the game. Senior Ryan Yamane opened the tournament with a single to left field and was moved into scoring position by Dean Lawson's sacrifice bunt. The Bears would then have a pair on for clean-up hitter Brett Minnick after Cole Maltese walked.
Minnick would drive home the first of six runs in the inning for UNC. The Bears would load the bases on a Corey Nakakura single and keep them loaded after a Payton Tapia walk. Cam Huber would then produce the biggest hit of the inning with a ball ripped down the right field line scoring a pair and making it a 4-0 game.
UNC would proceed to bat around the line-up and be up 6-0 after just half an inning.
Sacramento State wouldn't give in to the early deficit though, chipping away at the Northern Colorado lead with two runs in the first, two more in the third on a Chris Lewis home run and another in the fifth to make it a 6-5 game.
In the sixth, the Bears scored again with Cam Huber leading the inning off with a triple to right-center. Huber and Jacob Ek would perform a beautiful suicide squeeze play to increase the UNC lead to 7-5.
The bottom half of the inning would end up being the game decider though as the Hornets scored three runs to make it an 8-7 game.
The duo of Chad Perry and Tyler Beardsley would close the doors on any UNC comeback attempt.
Game Changing Moment
Having already scored a run in the inning, and looking to tie it up or take the lead Sacramento State leadoff hitter PJ Floyd stepped up to the plate with a runner on second and one out. Floyd would end up with the game deciding hit, a two-run home run to right field putting Sac State up at 8-7.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Redshirt-freshman Cam Huber enjoyed his first game inside Hohokam Stadium, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He finished the game just a home run shy of a cycle.
Sacramento State: Taking over for starter Max Karnos after the first inning, Austin Roots relief efforts were a big part of the Hornets comeback. Roots ended up going five innings allowing just one run on five hits and striking out three Bears.
Notables
- Senior and Arizona native Spencer Applebach had a solid relief effort going two and two thirds innings allowing no runs and no hits while striking out a pair.
- Four Bears finished the game with multiple hits. They were Ryan Yamane, Brett Minnick, Cam Huber and Jacob Ek.
- Half of Sacramento State's runs came on home runs. Two from Chris Lewis' to left field and two more on PJ Floyd's to right field.
