Northern Colorado baseball sends its seniors off with a 6-3 win Saturday
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado's baseball team sent its seniors out on a high note for their final game at Jackson Field Saturday afternoon. The Bears earned a 6-3 comeback victory over New Mexico State.
How it Happened
Unlike Friday's high scoring affair, runs were tough to come by for both teams on Saturday.
New Mexico State struck first with a solo home run from centerfielder Daniel Johnson in the third inning.
The Aggies would add on to its lead with another run in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from L.J. Hatch to go up 2-0.
UNC would tie the game up in the bottom half the inning. The Bears would load the bases on three straight walks by Corey Nakakura, Cam Huber and Joe Love. Senior shortstop Jacob Ek would come through for the Bears with a two-run single up the middle to tie the game up.
Northern Colorado would take its first lead of the game in the sixth. Rob Cashel's bunt for a single put pressure on the NMSU defense as he advanced to second on a throwing error from the Aggies third baseman. Ryan Yamane would bring his teammate home later on in the inning with a single to left field.
New Mexico State would come back to tie it up in the top half of the seventh.
The tie game would note last for long, as Payton Tapia hit a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the inning to put Northern Colorado up for good. It was Tapia's second home run of the year.
Cole Maltese tacked on a pair of insurance runs for UNC in eighth with a double to left centerfield. His double scored Cashel and Yamane.
Game Changing Moment
With the game hanging in the balance still in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cole Maltese was looking to turn around a 0-for-4 day with a pair on-base. He would expand the team's lead to three with an RBI double to left center, helping to seal the game for UNC.
Notables
- The win secured the No. 5 seed for Northern Colorado in the WAC Tournament starting on Wednesday.
- UNC's senior fielders went 6-for-13 on the day with three run scored and three RBIs.
- Senior left handed reliever Allen Cook earned his first save of the season with a two inning outing not allowing a run and giving up just two hits.
Quotable
Today is a great day to be a UNC Bear, to send off these seniors with a win. Those seven men will remember this game for the rest of their life, like I do about my last game here on the same field. Our work is not done yet. This team is all about its will and that that is going to help us be successful next week in Mesa.- Carl Iwasaki
