Northern Colorado baseball defeated UND 8-1 to compete a three-game sweep Sunday
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Northern Colorado baseball completed a three-game sweep of North Dakota on Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 win. The Bears used a good all-around game to earn the victory.
How It Happened
Just like the first two games in the series UNC was the first team to score on Sunday. Brett Minnick hit a two out, two-run home run to left field putting the Bears up 2-0.
UND would respond with a run of its own in the second inning to make it 2-1, before Northern Colorado went scored six runs unanswered.
UNC scored two runs in the fourth on a Tyler Yamaguchi RBI double and Jacob Ek RBI single, and added on two more runs in the sixth.
The pair of scores in the sixth came off another Ek hit. This one a single that brought in Cole Maltese and Yamaguchi.
Northern Colorado would add two more runs, one in the seventh and one in the eighth to get to the final of 8-1.
Game Changing Moment
Trailing just 4-1 heading into the sixth, North Dakota knew it had to limit UNC's offense as Nick Tanner was pitching a good game for the Bears. The Fighting Hawks were unable to do so, as Cole Maltese led the inning off with a single and then Tyler Yamaguchi reached on an error by UND third basemen Daniel Lockhert. Jacob Ek would deliver the nail in the coffin for UNC with his two run producing single down the left field line to make it a 6-1 Northern Colorado lead.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Freshman Tyler Yamaguchi had a solid series against North Dakota, and finished it off with a solid performance on Sunday. He was 2-for-5 on the day, also reaching on an error to score all three times he was on base. Yamaguchi also drove in a run for the team.
North Dakota: First baseman Tyler Berg was the only Fighting Hawk to record multiple hits in the game. Berg was 2-for-4 on the day with his solo home run in the second inning being the lone run scored for UND.
Notables
- A pair of Bears went yard today in Brett Minnick and Rob Cashel. It was Minnick's seventh home run of the year and Cahsel's second.
- Pitching was once again a big factor for UNC in the win. Starter Nick Tanner continued his streak of good Sunday starts going seven and a third innings allowing just the one run on seven hits while striking out eight and walking just one.
- Tanner's eight strikeouts match a season high for the team, set just the day before by teammate Alex Werbach.
- The series sweep is the first of the season for Northern Colorado and extends the team's win streak to four games, the longest of the season.
Quotable
I am proud of how our kids fought this weekend to earn the sweep. We are playing our best baseball of the year and it will be needed as we move forward in the month of May looking to clinch a berth to the WAC Tournament in Mesa, Arizona. – Carl Iwasaki
What's Next?
The Bears will bring their four game win streak home with them as they host Grand Canyon. The Lopes are the defending regular season champion. UNC and GCU will start the three game series on Friday at 3 pm.
