Northern Colorado's offense had only four hits in a 4-2 loss at Utah Valley
OREM, Utah – The Northern Colorado (5-21, 0-4 WAC) baseball team returned to Western Athletic Conference play on Friday night against Utah Valley. The host Wolverines (17-14, 4-3 WAC) would defeat the Bears 4-2.
How it Happened
Utah Valley, struck first, with a two-out rally to go up 1-0 with a single from three hole hitter Greyson Bodgen, a steal from him and an RBI double from Mark Kruger.
The Bears would not trail for long, evening up the score at one in the top of the second. Dan Reese would work a one out walk and come around to later score on a Dean Lawson single to right center. While on base, Reese stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Yamane.
In the fifth UVU would reclaim the lead at 2-1 when they loaded the bases, and scored one run with two outs.
The lead didn't last long once again for the Wolverines as Cole Maltese hit a leadoff home run in the sixth to tie the game up again this time at 2-2.
The seventh inning proved to be the game deciding inning. After shutting down UNC in order in the top half of it, Utah Valley would score a pair of runs in the bottom half to go up 4-2. The inning was added by a pair of triples from UVU hitters.
Game Changing Moment
After Spencer Gothberg hit a one-out RBI triple to give Utah Valley the 3-2 lead, Jake Atkinson's two-out triple pushed the insurance run across the plate for the Wolverines and would be the final run scored by either team.

Northern Colorado: Cole Maltese was one of just two Bears to score on the day. His fifth inning home run was his third on the year and tied the game up at two. He finished the day at 1-for-4, being just one of four UNC hitters to record of hit on the day as well.
Utah Valley: Reliever Jake Mayer come in with a runner on in the sixth inning and no outs, and pitched an exceptional four innings shutting down UNC's office. Mayer went four innings strong allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out four and walking none.
