Air Force defeated Northern Colorado 14-4 on Tuesday
GREELEY, Colo. – In the second of four mid-week games against Air Force (14-8), Northern Colorado (5-20) fell to the Falcons Tuesday afternoon 14-4.
How It Happened
Just like last week's game in Colorado Springs, Air Force jumped ahead early with its first four hitters reaxching to begin the game and scoring to lead 4-0 before UNC even came up to bat.
UNC would cut the Falcons lead in half in the second inning though. Dan Reese would reach on a fielder's choice, and then Ryan Yamane and Dean Lawson would each single to bring home the team's first run of the game.
Yamane would proceed to be driven in on a Tyler Yamaguchi single to center field, making it 4-2 after two.
Air Force would proceed to score the next 10 runs over six innings to take control of the game.
The Bears would continue to battle until the end putting up another two runs in the eighth.
Game Changing Moment
After Northern Colorado had cut the Air Force lead to two in the second, the Falcons responded with two runs in the top half of the third to grow it back to four. That inning started a streak of 10 straight runs from the Falcons before UNC would score again.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Despite struggles on offense for UNC overall, Dan Reese was a constant for the Bears at the plate. Reese scored two runs for the team while driving in another. He went 1-for-3 on the day with a walk and the one hit being a triple.
Air Force: First baseman Russell Williams has been a nightmare for Northern Colorado pitchers. After a 3-for-4 performance last week, he followed it up with a 4-for-5 showing today. Not only was he getting on base but he drove in five Falcons runs.
Notables
- Cole Maltese saw his six game hit streak end on Tuesday. Maltese went 0-for-4 in the game.
- Only one Air Force starter did not record a hit against the Bears. That was catcher Rob Dau, but he did draw two walks.
- After string together 19 hits last week vs UNC, Air Force put another 18 up this week. Those are the first and second most hits by a Northern Colorado opponent this season.
- Tuesday's game saw three triples. Northern Colorado's Dan Reese had one, while Air Force's Adam Grosebeck and Tyler Jones had the other two.
- Once again Tuesday means arm day for UNC, today they used a season high eight pitchers. Starter Ian Doughty went the furthest of the eight lasting 2 2/3 innings.
- Air Force pitcher Lance Fry had an impressive performance, he lasted two innings striking out the side each time.
What's Next?
The Bears are back on the road this weekend. UNC will head over to Orem, Utah to face Utah Valley for three games starting on Friday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m.
