Alex Werbach's eight inning performance helped UNC earn the 5-2 win over North Dakota
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Northern Colorado baseball earned its second series win of the season behind the strong pitching effort of Alex Werbach and good defense Saturday afternoon. The Bears (11-25, 6-7 WAC) defeated North Dakota (7-26, 3-14 WAC) by the score of 5-2 to earn the series win.
How it Happened
Northern Colorado was aggressive on the base paths and took an early lead. After going down in order in the first, the Bears heart of the lineup got UNC on the board in the second.
Ryan Yamane led the inning off with a triple and would come home in the next at-bat when Brett Minnick doubled to left field. UNC would use that 1-0 lead and build on it throughout the game to earn the victory.
In the third inning, the Bears added on a second run when Dean Lawson worked a one out walk before scoring on a delayed steal of home plate to put the team up 2-0.
For the third straight inning, Northern Colorado scored a run in the fourth. Dan Reese reached on a single and moved up on a productive groundout by Will Frei. Reese scored the third run of the game on a Jacob Ek single.
North Dakota would finally get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, when Miles Lewis, who worked a one out walk to get on, scored on an RBI single by Brett Harrison.
In the seventh and ninth inning, Northern Colorado added on a pair of insurance runs by Lawson and Ek.
Justin Mulvaney relieved Werbach after eight solid innings in the ninth, and got himself into a bases loaded jam with one out. The Fighting Hawks would score one run, before Mulvaney produced a game ending 4-6-3 double play to preserve the Bears 5-2 win.
Game Changing Moment
Having an early 1-0 lead and runners on the corners in the third, UNC executed a well-timed and well done double steal. As Ryan Yamane headed towards second for the steal Dean Lawson took off for home on the throw to second to steal put the Bears up 2-0. The play helped set the tone for the rest of the game for UNC and put pressure on UND to make plays to get back in the game.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Senior Alex Werbach had the best pitching performance of his career Saturday afternoon going eight innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out a career high eight batters and walking one on 138 pitches. He helped the Bears in earning the win, and also received some solid defense from the Bears fielders during
the game.
North Dakota: Center fielder Miles Lewis was a factor in both runs scored today by the Fighting Hawks. He ended the day going 2-for-2 at the plate, also reaching on a pair of walks. He drove in UND's first run of the game in the fifth, before being the team's last run to score in the ninth.
Notables
- Alex Werbach's eight strikeouts were a team season high. He passed up the previous high that had been set by Jacob Howard and Allen Cook who each had seven in a game.
- Ryan Yamane was the lone Bear to record multiple hits in the game, finishing with a line of 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.
- The Bears hitters worked eight walks on the day. Three of those eight walks came from Cole Maltese.
Quotable
We played plus defense through the game today which paid off in the last frame to secure the win. We will need to be at our best to complete a series sweep tomorrow, which will pay off for us in our playoff hopes in May. –Carl Iwasaki
