UNC baseball defeated North Dakota 6-4 Friday night
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Northern Colorado baseball took game one of this weekend's three-game series against North Dakota Friday night 6-4. UNC (10-25, 5-7 WAC) earned the win behind some solid early pitching and late inning clutch hitting.
How It Happened
Northern Colorado got on the board first when Dan Reese started the second inning off with a single and both Brett Minnick and Tyler Yamaguchi followed suit with a double and single to put UNC up 2-0.
The Bears would continue to shut out UND until the sixth when the Fighting Hawks would load the bases loaded. UND would end up pushing three runs across during the inning as they kept the bases loaded throughout the inning.
UNC would come right back at North Dakota in the seventh to tie it up. Tyler Yamaguchi would single to start the inning and later be brought home on a Nick Tanner ground out.
The game would not stay tied for long as UND retook the lead at 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning when Tyler Midas hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Miles Lewis.
Just like in the seventh, Northern Colorado would respond with a run in the top of the eighth. Cole Maltese would leadoff the inning with a walk, with UNC playing small-ball to move him into scoring position. Brett Minnick would deliver the RBI hit with a single to center field.
The two teams would enter the ninth tied at four. Freshman Griffin Mueller would start the inning off as a pinch hitter and earning the walk. UNC would once again execute well with the small-ball to get the runner in scoring position for Dean Lawson. Lawson would reach on a fielder's choice to bring in the go-ahead run.
Lawson would end up coming around to score later on in the inning as an insurance run for the Bears.
In the bottom of the ninth North Dakota would only be able to earn a two out walk.
Game Changing Moment
Rob Cashel came in to pinch run for Griffin Mueller who earned a leadoff walk in the ninth. Cashel would be on third base with one out when Dean Lawson came up to the plate, to deliver the game-winning hit for the Bears.
