Northern Colorado baseball defeated CSU Bakersfield 9-2 and 6-3 Friday
GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep in thrilling fashion on Friday afternoon. The Bears defeated CSU Bakersfield 9-2 in the first game and with a walk-off home run from Cole Maltese in extra innings to win 6-3 in the second.
Game 1
How it Happened
Northern Colorado got things started early with Nick Tanner starting the bottom of the first with a single and came around to score on the Dean Lawson triple.
The Bears would continue the inning with a one out RBI single from Ryan Yamane, who would come around to score later on as the Bears led 3-0 after one.
The Roadrunners would get a run back in the top half of the fourth to make it 3-1, before UNC would put the game away.
Jacob Ek would lead the bottom of the fourth off with a triple, coming home on a wild pitch. Following Ek's leadoff triple, five of the next six UNC hitters reached safely, with
all of them coming around to score.
The lone Bear not to reach in that stretch was Nick Tanner who played some small ball with a sacrifice bunt.
By the time the inning ended, Northern Colorado had batted around and scored six runs for a commanding 9-1 lead.
CSUB would try and cut into the Bears lead with a run in the fifth.
Game Changing Moment
After a pair of walks and the Nick Tanner sacrifice bunt, Dean Lawson delivered with a one out single to score a couple of Bears and give UNC a 6-1 lead, taking away the spirit of the Road Runners
Game 2
How it Happened
Just like the first game of the day, UNC got out to a quick start scoring a run in the first when Nick Tanner got a leadoff single to later be brought home on a single by Ryan Yamane.
In the second inning it was a repeat of the first for the Bears. This time Dan Reese opened the inning with a single. Payton Tapia's single with one out to center field would score Reese and put the Bears up 2-0.
The Roadrunners would cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth, before gaining their first lead of the series in the fifth when they scored a pair to go up 3-2.
The CSUB lead would las until the sixth when UNC would record a comeback. Ryan Yamane would come across to tie the game on a Reese single to center field tying it at three and leading the game to extras.
UNC had the top of the order due up in the bottom half of the 10th, and they did not disappoint. Nick Tanner would single up the middle and Dean Lawson would reach on a hit by pitch to bring Maltese to the plate. He would not disappoint smashing his fifth home run of the year for the walk-off win.
Game Changing Moment
After failing to convert on a two on, no out situation in the bottom of the ninth the team faced a similar situation in the next 10th, this time converting. Cole Maltese would leave no doubt with his walk-off three-run home run to send the Bear fans home happy.

Northern Colorado: Ryan Yamane enjoyed his time in the clean-up spot today going 5-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He also had a walk, coming in the first game. His run in the second game proved to be important as it helped send the game into extras.
