Northern Colorado baseball fell in 10 innings to Air Force 4-2
GREELEY, Colo. – For the third time in four games, Northern Colorado baseball ended up playing in an extra-innings game. Tuesday, the Bears (8-23) and Air Force Falcons (18-13) ended up playing 10 innings with Air Force coming out the victors of a 4-2 game.
How It Happened
The Bears scored first in the game with a two-out rally in the first inning. Cole Maltese and Ryan Yamane each walked with two outs. Dan Reese would deliver for UNC with a good battle at the plate hitting a 2-2 pitch over the shortstop's head to fall in for a hit and score Maltese.
Air Force used a leadoff single to start a fourth inning rally, in which they scored two runs and took a 2-1 lead.
Nick Tanner's leadoff single up the middle and advancement to third on an errant pickoff throw from Air Force pitcher Lance Fry, put him in prime position to tie the game.
Maltese would bring him home on a jammed 3-2 pitch that skipped past the pitcher and was picked up by the shortstop allowing Tanner to score.
The Bears would miss out on a great opportunity in the ninth with two on and no outs, but unable to push either run across to end the game and send it into extras.
Air Force took advantage of UNC's missed opportunity in the 10th when they scored two in the inning.
Game Changing Moment
With a runner on second and one out after a sacrifice bunt in the 10th, Air Force received the break it needed. A chopper hit to UNC shortstop Jacob Ek was fielded cleanly, but an errant throw allowed the hitter to reach and the runner to advance to third base. Although the runner on third base would end up cut down at home plate in a fielder's choice, the Falcons runner that reached ended up being the game winning run.
