Northern Colorado defeated Utah Valley 8-6 in 12 innings on Sunday
How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Utah Valley would strike first in the second with three runs to go up on UNC early 3-0.
Both teams' bats were silent in the next two innings, before UNC started a one out rally with a walk by Jacob Garcia in the fifth. Teammates Tyler Yamaguchi and Rob Cashel would each single to load the bases for the top of the order.
Nick Tanner would not waste the opportunity to help himself and the team out, with a two RBI single to right center. Jacob Ek would follow it up with a well-placed squeeze play to tie the game up at three before the inning ended.
In the sixth UNC would take its first lead of the day. Dean Lawson led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Dan Reese would move him over to third and Yamaguchi would drive him home on his second hit of the game.
The lead would not last long for the Bears, as Utah Valley would respond with two in the bottom half of the inning to chase the UNC starter in Tanner and take a 5-4 lead.
Northern Colorado would fight right back at the Wolverines by tying it in the seventh. Cole Maltese would be the Bear to tie it up. He doubled with an out before advancing to third on a ground ball and scoring on a wild pitch.
Utah Valley took the lead again in the bottom of the eighth. They opened the inning with a single and double to put runners on second and third with no outs. The go-ahead run would score on a wild pitch ball four to give the Wolverines the lead.
Rob Cashel would tie the game up again to leadoff the ninth. He would drive the 2-1 pitch over the left center fence to make it 6-6 with his first career home run.
After going scoreless in the 10th and 11th inning, UNC put a pair on the board in the 12th. Maltese and Corey Nakakura started the inning with a walk and single.
After consecutive outs by UNC, Will Frei stepped into the batter's box for his first at-bat of the day after being a defensive replacement. Both runners would advance on a passed ball, before Utah Valley's right fielder was unable to catch Frei's fly ball to score two.
In the bottom of the inning, Connor Leedholm would allow just a two out single to preserve the Bears win.
Game Changing Moment
After once again battling back into the game, UNC headed into the ninth inning with a one run deficit. It took just four pitches for that to change when Rob Cashel got ahold of the 2-1 pitch and taking it for a ride over the left center wall to tie the game and force extra innings.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: In a game that required a complete team effort to earn the win, freshman right handed pitcher Luke Haynes made a huge difference for the Bears. Haynes pitched four innings in relief for UNC allowing just one UVU run on four hits with three walks while striking out a team season high seven batters. Haynes pitched the team through the late innings, and the first inning of extras.
Utah Valley: Catcher Jake Atkinson was one of four Wolverines to record two hits on the day, but his had more of an effect on the game, by driving in a run and scoring one as well. He also had a walk in the game
Notables
- The win ended a seven-game overall losing streak and a 13-game WAC losing streak.
- Both teams had a stretch of having nine straight batter being sat down in the middle innings of the game.
- This was Northern Colorado's first extra inning game of the year. Last year they played in two extra inning games, going 1-1 in them
- The game reaching the 12th inning, is the first time UNC has played in a game lasting more than 10 innings since May 2012. That game came against Texas Pan American, now UT Rio Grande Valley, with the Bears winning 7-5.
- Luke Haynes seven strike outs in relief are a season high for the Bears. Alex Werbach previously held the previous high of six against Sacramento State.
- Nick Tanner once again had a good day at the plate, He went 4-for-6 with all four hits being singles. Although he would not score in the game he did drive home a pair of runs.
