UNC fell against Nebraska-Omaha in both games on Tuesday
GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado opened up their 2016 home schedule on Tuesday with a double header against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Despite valiant effort by the Bears, they took losses in each, 8-1 and 9-0.
GAME 1: Northern Colorado 1, Nebraska-Omaha 8
The Bears had three hits and one run in the first game against the Mavs, with the hits coming from Erica Dick, Ari Samaniego, and Rachel Johnson.
The most successful inning for UNC was the fifth, where they picked up one run and two hits. Adeline Coldiron got the inning going, making it on base after getting hit by a pitch. She would advance after a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jordyn Waitrak, and a single by Samaniego would advance Coldiron to third. In the next at-bat, Johnson would single up the right side, bringing Coldiron in for the RBI. Unfortunately, runners would be stranded on second and third after outs by the next two batters up.
Dick's hit would come in the sixth inning, but a line out and pop up would put two outs on the board for the Bears. Coldiron would reach first on a fielder's choice in the following at-bat, but the play would have Dick out at second from the short stop, drawing the inning to a close.
Kelli Kleis and Lauren Paige split the pitching duties, with Kleis starting and finishing out the game, pitching six innings total. Kleis picked up four strikeouts throughout those si innings, but walked five batters and earned four runs, landing her with the loss.
GAME 2: Northern Colorado 0, Nebraska-Omaha 9
The second game of the day was less successful for UNC, with the Bears drawing no hits or runs, with the game ending in six innings.
The Northern Colorado squad would have 18 put outs with 10 assists, but they would be unable to capitalize offensively, stranding three runners on base (reached on two walks and one hit by pitch).
Jayme Reddacliff pitched all six innings, picking up just one strikeout. The Mavericks would have seven hits off of Reddacliff, but all nine of their runs would be unearned.
Northern Colorado will shake off their Tuesday afternoon losses as they head to Wichita, Kansas for a three-game series against Wichita State. UNC will play a double header on Saturday before closing out their weekend on Sunday morning at 10am MT.
