Northern Colorado women’s tennis picks up a 4-3 road win over North Dakota Saturday afternoon.
Grand Forks, N.D. – The Northern Colorado women's tennis team earned a big road conference win on Saturday, defeating North Dakota 4-3.
"This match was the breakthrough that we needed to propel ourselves into the remainder of the season," head coach Brenda Gallegos said. "We made the job harder than it needed to be by losing the doubles point, but it was great that when we were faced with pressure we were able to close out the singles matches".
After UND picked up the doubles point by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, UNC knew if they were to win the match they would have to do so in comeback fashion.
The Bears would get on the board with a pair of straight set wins by Hilary Walters-West (6-2, 7-5) and Lily-Ana Kreutzer (7-6, 6-1) in the No. 3 and No. 6 matches, respectively.
"I'm really proud of Lily because this was her first conference match and she rose to the occasion and pulled out her match which really helped us win the overall match," Gallegos said.
Through the first four singles matches, UND held a 3-2 lead needing just on more match win to clinch it overall.
Northern Colorado would not back down in the situation though, coming back with a pair of three seas victories. The two UNC players to earn those wins were Lea Krajcovicova (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) and Anna Battersby (6-1, 5-7, 6-1).
"Another player that I was proud of, is Lea's performance because she battled until the bitter end, and because of her determination she was able to pull out the win for the team," said Gallegos.
With the comeback victory for UNC the team improves to them to 2-4 overall in Big Sky play.
The Bears will now return home next Sunday, April 2 to take on another conference foe in Sacramento State at 11:30
