Myers tied for first place, forcing a playoff for the individual title, but came up just short taking second overall shooting +4 over for the tournament
FINAL RESULTS
ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Senior Amanda Myers was just short of being crowned the individual champion on Tuesday at the Sacramento State Invitational. Myers went to two playoff holes before falling to San Francisco's Vanessa Ha, earning second place.
Myers sat in third and was two strokes back of Ha, but carded four birdies in her final round, including back-to-back birdies on seventeen and eighteen to comeback and shoot 72 (E) to tie for the lead and force a playoff.
"The team and I could not be more proud of Amanda and her second place finish," head coach Stephen Bidne said. "she fought back from being down two shots with two holes to play and went birdie-birdie to tie for the lead which made for uite the exciting finish."
Both players marked par on the first playoff, but Ha edged out Myers in the second playoff hole ending her champion bid.
Myers totaled a 220 (74,74,72) and finished the tournament +4 over, this was her higest placing of the season.
"Being in a playoff is a totally different mindset because instead of it being just you versus the golf course, it's now you versus another person," Bidne added. "Amanda didn't flinch under pressure and didn't hit one bad shot in the two holes of extra play, but unfortunately at the end one putt didn't go her way. I know she is a little disappointed at the outcome, but the team and I are so happy for her. She played wonderful golf all three rounds and it's only time before she'll come out on top."
The Bears were in fifth place as a team after 36 holes and stayed there in the finale shooting a 305, tying their best round of the tournament.
The team tallied a 919 (305,309,305) three strokes away from Sacramento State (916) who had the best invite of any Big Sky School at the meet.
Senior Nicole Okada had the second best finish for the team and her best round overall, walking into the clubhouse with a 75 (+3) in the final 18 holes.
Okada carded 10 pars, a birdie and an eagle along with six bogeys. She totaled a 235 (77,83,75) and tied for 33rd on the leaderboard.
Junior Kala Keltz, who was tied for 23rd overall heading into the final day, fired a 79 (+7) clinching her Top 25 placing, staying in 23rd, the second best finish for any UNC golfer at the invite.
Keltz was solid on the front nine, making the turn at +2 over, but got out of sync writing down a double or bogey on five of the last nine holes. The junior completed the two-day tournament with a 231 (74,78,79).
Concluding the tournament for Northern Colorado was junior Baile Winslow and sophomore Christina Ferreira.
Winslow wrapped up her day with an 83 (+11), while Ferreira came in with a 79 (+7). Winslow totaled a 237 (80,74,83) and Ferreira a 246 (83,84,79) coming in tied for 44th and 64th.
"We were able to get four scores in the 70's today which was encouraging, but we just had a tough time all day finding the fairway," Bidne said of the overall team performance. "Every hole on this course is narrow and tree-lined, so if you're not comfortable off the tee it makes for a difficult time to scramble and make par. Fifth place in a field of fifteen teams, where we had a realistic shot at a top-three finish was another step in the right direction for this program."
Women's golf has one final tune up before the Big Sky Championships on April 11-12, competing in the Montana State Bobcat Invitational.
"Everyone is showing they can score low and it's just a matter of everyone clicking at the same time to take us to that next step," he finished with. "We have a couple of weeks until our next event which will be at a similar course to our conference tournament golf course, so it will give us great preparation to make a charge coming down the stretch of the season."
