FINAL RESULTS
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Northern Colorado women's golf jumped up three spots in Tuesday's finale to earn third place at the Montana State Bobcat Spring Invite. The Bears carded a 392 (+4) which the lowest round of any team on the day and the second lowest round of the tournament.
The Bears finished the 54-hole tournament with a 909 (+45), five strokes better than any other Big Sky school at the meet.
"Today was an exciting day to be a Bear. After struggling the first two rounds, we showed our true character and grit and came back with a vengeance today posting one of the lowest rounds as a team since I've been coach," head coach Stephen Bidne said. "We did a better job with our course management and more importantly hit the ball with fearlessness instead of cautiously steering it."
Junior Kala Keltz took home the individual title for UNC as well, her first of the season and career. Keltz shot a 77 (+5) in the final round to finish with a 219 (+3). Her first and second round scores of 71 (-1) were tied as the second lowest rounds of the tournament.
Keltz claimed the top honors by a single stroke, besting Seattle's Alexus Song who earned second overall.
"I couldn't be happier for Kala claiming her first collegiate individual win. She has worked extremely hard this year on her game and I knew it was only a matter of time before she would be raising a first place trophy," Bidne said of Keltz. "She showed great maturity and confidence and for the most part played boring golf. Fairways and greens followed by more fairways and greens. It was truly fun to watch."
Freshman Janet Yeo notched the best round of the day for UNC and tied the lowest round of the tournament with a 70 (-2). Yeo was good for three birdies and 14 pars throughout the finale. Her only bogey came on the 11th, but finished out with par on the final seven holes.
The freshman jumped up 36 spots on the leaderboard with an overall score of 231 (+15) and tied for 18th, her highest finish of the year.
Senior Nicole Okada also secured a Top 25 finish, tying for 23rd overall in the 98-member field. Okada walked into the clubhouse with her best round of the tournament of 73 (+1), finishing with three birdies and 11 pars.
Her overall invite total was 233 (+17) and she moved up 28 spots in the rankings in the final 18 holes.
After two difficult rounds on Monday senior Amanda Myers fought back to come away with 72 (E) on Tuesday. Myers marked four birdies and four bogeys with 10 pars to go along with it.
Myers concluded the three-round meet with a 237 (+21) and tied for 43rd.
Junior Baile Winslow carded an 86 (+14) to end her invite. Winslow earned a 241 (+25) tournament score and tied for 59th place.
Seattle took home the team title finishing with an 893 (+29) and Wyoming came in second place with an 894 (+30).
"I'm so proud of the girls in fighting back and making a charge up the leaderboard knowing we didn't play to our potential the first two rounds," Bidne finished with. "It gives us a lot of confidence heading into conference at a course that is very similar to what we just played. We know what we're capable of shooting and so hopefully we can continue this positive momentum heading into the Big Sky Championship next week."
The women's golf team will now turn its focus the Big Sky Championships in Boulder City, Nevada April 18-20. The team has already place there once this season and came away with a second place finish in the Bucknell Spring Break Classic.
