Northern Colorado defeated Regis on Tuesday 9-4
GREELEY, Colo. – A run scored in each of the first four innings helped Northern Colorado baseball defeat Regis 9-4 on Tuesday afternoon. The win snapped the team's two-game losing streak.
How It Happened
The Bears got out to the early lead with its first four runners reach via three hits and an error to go up 1-0 in the first.
In the second, UNC loaded the bases to start the inning and end up pushing four runs across to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
In the third and fourth inning the Bears added on three more runs to be up 8-0 going into the final half of the game.
The Rangers would score its four runs with one in the sixth and three in the eighth.
Game Changing Moment
Although early in the game, the second inning proved to be the deciding factor. Catcher Will Frei reached to start the inning after an error from Regis' second baseman. Dean Lawson and Tyler Yamaguchi would then load the bases with a well-placed bunt and walk, respectively. Jacob Ek delivered the big blow with the bases loaded pulling a ball down the left field line to drive home two.
Players of the Game
UNC: Dean Lawson earned a start today, giving regular second baseman Ryan Yamane the day off. Lawson made the most of his opportunity going 3-for-4 at the plate and driving in a run. In the field he also made some good plays, recording a putout and three assists.
Regis: Josh Newel showed why he is the leadoff hitter for the Rangers, going 1-for-2 with a walk as well. He was the first run to score for RU when he led off the sixth with a triple and was later brought in on a single.
Stats of the Game
"It was good to come out and score in every inning early on. We have not had the offensive non-conference season that we are used to, but we are starting to get in sync and we are seeing our young talent to take off."
"Our pitchers did what we know they can do today, keeping the game close and allowing our offense to get going and take over the game."
"Pitching and defense will be the key starting on Thursday when Rio Grande Valley comes into Jackson. If we can do that well I have faith in our offense can get timely hits and get us off to a strong start in WAC play."
What's Next?
Northern Colorado will start WAC play at home on Thursday against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Bears and Vaqueros start the three game series at 3:00 p.m. They will conclude it on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at noon due to the inclement weather in for the forecast for Saturday.
