Northern Colorado baseball fell to South Dakota State 8-3 Friday afternoon
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball hosted South Dakota State for its home opener on Friday afternoon, falling to the Jackrabbits 8-3.
How It Happened
South Dakota State struck early with three runs, seeing three of its first four hitters reaching base and scoring.
In the third, Paul Jacobson manufactured his own run to put the Jacks up 4-0, and they added on another run before it ended, to be ahead 5-0.
After SDSU added on another run in the top of the fourth, UNC got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Cole Maltese led off the inning with a single and was brought home on the next at bat by Brett Minnick's triple to right-center.
Northern Colorado brought across another run in the inning from Dan Reese. Reese reached on a single, stole second and then scored on a sharply hit Nick Tanner ball down the first base line.
The Jacks tacked on an insurance run in the 8th to be up 8-3.
Players of the Game
UNC: Brett Minnick was 3-for-3 at the plate for UNC driving in a run and working a walk in the game. He finished just a home run shy of the cycle. It was his humbleness after the game that was even more impressive. "I wouldn't say I had a good game, I gave up two runs, one on the bases, one in the field and only produced one, so that is still a negative margin in my mind."
SDSU: Paul Jacobson did not record a hit in the game, but he was a key factor anyway. As the leadoff hitter he worked three walks, scoring twice on them. He also had three stolen bases in the game.
Stats of the Game
They Said It
"Games like this hurt us, but we are a resilient team, and will bounce back from that." – Dan Reese
"Today was one of those baseball days, and the breaks didn't go our way. When we play to the level I know we can, we are a good ball club and can win some games." – Carl Iwasaki
What's Next
The Bears and Jackrabbits will go back at ittomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jackson Field. UNC will send Alex Werbach to the mound to start tomorrow.
