Northern Colorado baseball earned a get-away day 3-2 win over CSUN
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Northern Colorado baseball took the get-away game against CSUN Sunday afternoon 3-2. The Bears used solid pitching throughout and an early lead to earn the win.
How it Happened
Northern Colorado jumped out early in the game with back-to-back singles by the Hawaiian duo of Ryan Yamane and Tyler Yamaguchi in the first inning to put runners on the corners. Starting pitcher and DH Nick Tanner helped his own cause driving in Yamane for the first run of the game.
Rob Cashel later doubled to left field to bring home Yamaguchi and give UNC a 2-0 lead through the first half inning.
The Bears added on the eventual game winning run in the second inning. Ryan Yamane started a two out rally when he was hit by a pitch. Yamaguchi followed that up with a double down the left field line to drive in Yamane.
After four hitless innings for CSUN, Jayson Newman started the fifth with a lead-off single. He later scored after a UNC error extended the inning.
With the extended opportunity, the Matadors cut UNC's lead to 3-2.
CSUN threatened a couple more times in the late innings, but were shut down by Northern Colorado's bullpen, earning UNC a win.
Players of the Game
UNC: Senior Ryan Yamane set the table for UNC early in the game and the Bears took advantage of it in the win. In his first two at bats he reached base and scored both times. On the day he finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
CSUN: The combination of Carter Yankie, Nick Viola, Joey Deceglie and Samuel Myers pitched four strong innings, keeping the Matadors in the game and giving them a chance to comeback. Over their four innings of work they combined to allow no runs on just two hits, while striking out five and allowing no walks.
