FINAL RESULTS
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Women's golf wrapped up play at the Grand Canyon Invite on Wednesday. The Bears shot their best round of the tournament with a 307 (+23) to finish with a final team score of 935 (320, 308, 307) and earn seventh place overall.
UNC moved up three spots throughout the three day event after starting in 10th.
"Today we had a tough time being fully committed to every shot and unfortunately had to rely on our short games quite heavily once again," Head Coach Stephen Bidne said. "We had a couple of players step up and play better, but again, we had a few too many double bogeys."
Senior Amanda Myers stepped up and had a strong finish after two troubled rounds, firing a 75 (+4). Myers sat even heading into the turn, but couldn't maintain the same level of play on the back nine, finishing +4 over. She ended the afternoon with 12 pars and a birdie.
Myers totaled a 237 (83, 79, 75) and came in tied for 32nd overall.
Junior Kala Keltz had the best Invite for Northern Colorado. Keltz's final round of 76 propelled her to a Top 20 finish, tying for 18th place with a 233 (81, 76, 76) total.
Keltz matched her second day score of 76 (+5), ending with a team-high 13 pars. Much like Myers' round, Keltz was just +1 over after the front nine, but a streak of three straight bogeys on holes 11 through 13 aided in the +5 over finish.
Junior Baile Winslow and Senior Nicole Okada etched a Top 25 finish, tying for 25th on the leaderboard after their rounds of 78 (+7). Both Winslow (80, 77, 78) and Okada (81, 76, 78) signed off on 235 tournament totals.
After a hard start to the morning, Winslow was +5 over heading into the last half of the course, but she recovered well, walking off the 18th just +2 over on the back nine.
Okada's front nine was up and down. She started the day with a par and proceeded to mark a double, a bogey and a triple on the next three holes. Okada shook off the slow start carding a birdie and the team's only eagle of the day on hole six. She finished the last three holes with two bogeys and another birdie to make the turn at +4 over.
The final nine holes were much more consistent for the senior, carding six pars and three bogeys to end +3 over on the back.
Sophomore Christina Ferreira round out the team with an 85 (+14), finishing +6 over on the front and +8 over on the back. Ferreira scored a 245 (78, 82, 85) to come in a tie for 58th at the meet.
Freshman Janet Yeo, who played as an independent at the Invite tied with Keltz for 18th overall after shooting a 74 (+3) on Wednesday, her best round of the tournament.
She marked 13 pars and a birdie in her final 18 holes of action.
Yeo finished with a total of 233 (84, 75, 74).
North Dakota State was crowned as the team champion at the Invite. NDSU finished with a 918 (+66) total. UT Rio Grande Valley's Emma Mesta earned the individual title, shooting a 221 (+8) after 54 holes.
"We have a week and a half before we head out to our next event in Las Vegas and a big emphasis of our preparation will be on our short game," Bidne added. "Around the greens is where this game is won and we need to do a better job chipping it closer to the hole if we want to contend. The girls are right on the edge of getting back to form and I think a week's worth of practice will do the team well heading into our next event."
The women's golf team is on the links again March 7-8, competing in the Bucknell Spring Break Series in Boulder City, Nevada, the same spot of the 2016 Big Sky Tournament.
