PDF BOX SCORE
MOSCOW, Idaho – Northern Colorado (8-16, 5-7 Big Sky) lost another tough one, falling down stretch at Idaho (15-10, 7-5 Big Sky) 73-67 on Thursday night, handing the Bears their third straight loss.
UNC led by as many as 13 (29-16) points in the first half before the Vandals battled back on a 12-1 rally, cutting the lead to just two points at the half, 34-32. Over that run, Northern Colorado made just one field goal in a seven and a half minute span.
Idaho outscored UNC 41-33 in the second half, closing out the game at the free throw making seven out of eight attempts. The Bears are now 0-3 all-time against UI.
Junior guards, Jordan Wilson and Anthony Johnson paced UNC combining for 35 of the team's 67 points. Wilson poured in a team-high 18 points, while Johnson chipped in 17. Wilson finished 6-of-15 (40.0%) from the floor, including 4-of-10 (40.0%) from the three-point arc. Johnson had similar numbers, ending 6-of-13 (46.3%) from the field and 5-of-9 (55.5%) from downtown.
As a team, UNC finished 42.9% (21-of-49) shooting, but were better from beyond the arc at 45.5% (10-of-22).
"I would say what hurt us is our lack of an inside presence against their zone and when we got it in there other than Tanner Morgan, we didn't have too many other guys that were able to finish," head coach B.J. Hill said. "They were able to push out on us more as the game went on – our guards have to do a better job of looking for them even though they weren't scoring because it shrinks the defense and opens up more opportunities to score."
Northern Colorado fell behind early (5-0), but got baskets to fall midway through the first half, exploiting a 12-2 run to take a 22-13 lead with 10:30 to play until intermission.
UNC continued to build on that lead, taking a 13 point advantage (29-16) just five minutes later.
It was all Idaho to end the half, outscoring the Bears 16-5 in the final five minutes of the first act
The second half was back and forth featuring three ties and seven different lead changes.
Trailing 53-50 with 7:04 to play, Wilson knocked down a three to tie the game, but that is as close as it would come for the team.
Northern Colorado got within one (64-63) with 1:10 left on the clock after a lay-in from junior forward, Tanner Morgan in the post, but Idaho had the answer at the opposite end of the court with a bucket from Nate Sherwood, giving the Vandals a three-point favor.
"I thought our defense was better in the second half even though they wore us out from the free throw line because of some poor assignments, but again you have to look from game to game and we showed great improvement," Hill added. "Being away from home a lot of times things don't go as you want, but I thought the way we showed up in the first half was big time."
UNC travels to Cheney, Washington to end the weekend with a match up against Eastern Washington (14-10, 8-4 Big Sky) who are coming of a 95-85 win over North Dakota. Tip against the Eags is set for 3:05 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Feb. 13.
Stat of the Game:
- Idaho was able to get to the free throw line 10 more times than UNC, shooting 83.3% in the process, knocking down 25-of-30, with 20 of those makes coming in the second half alone.
