CHENEY, Wash. – Junior guard, Anthony Johnson scored a Division I single game program record 37 points at Eastern Washington (15-10, 9-4 Big Sky) on Saturday, but his offensive explosion wasn't enough as Northern Colorado (8-17, 5-8 Big Sky) dropped its fourth straight, 97-80 to the Eagles.
Johnson's 37 points was a career-best and topped the previous record of 34 points set by former guard, Tevin Svihovec in the 2011-12 season at Cal Poly.
Johnson finished 9-of-22 (40.9%) from the floor and 3-of-8 (37.5%) from beyond the arc, but was perfect from the charity stripe going 16-of-16, tying the UNC D1 record for most consecutive free throws made in a game set by former standout guard, Devon Beitzel who achieved the mark against Idaho State in the 2010-11 season.
"Experience is a heck of a teacher and as a staff we knew exactly what was going to happen and what they (Eastern Washington) were going to try to do, and they did just that, so it's unfortunate that we had some guys that didn't heed that warning," head coach B.J. Hill said. "But I'm not down in the dumps right now because I'm excited that I've found some guys that are willing to compete for the blue and gold. Nothing exposes you as a human being like adversity and we have faced some adversity on the road and I found out today who on our team is willing to give it absolutely everything they have despite what the scoreboard says."
Two other Bears finished in double figures on the night. Freshman guard, Jordan Davis poured in 21 points, just one shy of a career-high and junior guard, Dallas Anglin finished with 12.
After a layup from junior forward, Jon'te Dotson to start the game, Eastern Washington rolled for 19 straight points over the next eight minutes of the first half to take a commanding lead.
The Eagles led by as many as 28 (48-20) in the first 20 minutes of regulation, but the Bears ended on an 11-3 run to head to the locker room down 20, 51-31.
Northern Colorado outscored EWU in the second half 49-46, but the damage by the Eagles in the first half was too much to overcome.
As a team, UNC ended the day 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the field and 5-of-17 (29.4%) on three-point field goals. The most impressive stat of the night though was their free throws. The Bears finished with a season-best 91.3% from the line, making 21-of-23 attempts.
"We didn't play well – they kicked our tail, but I found some guys that are willing to compete for me and I'm awfully excited about that," Hill added. "As a coach, all you want to know is what you're going to get in the areas of effort, attitude and enthusiasm. If you know what you're going to get out of those areas you can live with jump shots going in, jump shots going out, guys dribbling it off their foot, you can live with all those things as long as you know you have guys that are out their fighting and doing the best they can for the guy next to them."
Northern Colorado has a week to prepare for a trip to North Dakota to round out its three-game road stretch. The Bears and the Fighting Hawks will face off next Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1:00 p.m. (MT).
