Â
Turning Heads
- Northern Colorado's win over No. 18 Montana got recognition from around FCS. The Bears received 41 votes in the STATS FCS Top 25 National Poll and two votes in NCAA FCS Coaches' Poll. The 41 votes are the most UNC has received since making the move to the FCS.
Â
A Look At Cal Poly
- Cal Poly is coming off a tough loss at Weber State 22-15 last weekend. The Mustangs boast the best rushing offense in the Big Sky with their triple option offense. Poly is averaging 370.4 yards per game on the ground with running back, Joe Protheroe paving the way. Protheroe is averaging 129.6 rushing yards per game with 9 touchdowns, both league bests. Overall as a team, CP has scored 29 rushing touchdowns.
Â
One For The Ages
- Northern Colorado made history last Saturday, defeating No. 18 Montana 28-25. It was the first time in Division I program history that UNC beat the Griz and the first time in the overall series in 40 years (1976).
Â
Finally Got One
- It's been a long season for the UNC special teams. After producing four touchdowns last season the Bears had been held scoreless on special teams until last weekend. Senior DE, Mikhail Dubose blocked a punt early in the first quarter and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown.Â
Â
Rumblin'
- Used mostly as a complimentary back all season, Graham got his first start of the season against No. 18 Montana on Saturday, and made it count. The senior rushed for 130 yards on 14 carries (9.3 ypc) and added in a touchdown. The touchdown run came from 38 yards out.
Â
Top Of The Sky
- For the second straight week, Kyle Newsom recorded a career-best 17 tackles in the win over No. 18 Montana. The senior linebacker played a big role in the win, including the hit on Montana QB, Chalich that caused him to fumble at the goal line on UM's two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter. Newsom also added in 3.0 TFLs for 7 yards, 1.0 sack for 1 yard and his total tackles pushed him over 100 tackles on the season, with 103, which currently makes him the Big Sky leader in tackles.
Â
Deggsmania
- Redshirt junior receiver, Hakeem Deggs recorded his seventh touchdown pass of the season last Saturday. Deggs caught just one pass, but one was all he needed as he took it 58 yards for the score. The last time UNC had a receiver catch seven touchdowns came in the 2014 season when Dimitri Stimphil did it. The most TD passes a receiver has caught in the Division I era was 10, done by Patrick Walker in 2011.
            Â
Playoffs?
- Northern Colorado remains in the playoff hunt with a 6-4 overall record. The Bears are currently tied for fourth place in the Conference with Cal Poly and Southern Utah. Cal Poly has been tabbed as the third team to make the playoffs from the Big Sky Conference in most projections, so a statement win over the Mustangs and some help from other teams around the FCS, gives the Bears a solid resume when it comes time for the playoff committee to choose who gets in.
Â
November 19
- Northern Colorado has just played two games in program history on the date. The Bears hold a 1-1 overall record, defeating Nevada 30-7 on 1960 and then falling at South Dakota State in 2005, 30-14.
Heck Of An Ending
- The Bears will face it's third straight Top 25 opponent in as many weeks when they head to Cal Poly. The Mustangs are currently ranked No. 21 in the country. UNC also faced then No. 11 North Dakota and No. 18 Montana, going 1-1 in those games. Northern Colorado has never defeated Cal Poly in the Division I era, and 37 years (1979) have passed since the last time the Bears have handed CP a loss in the all-time series.
Â
Getting It Done On The Field And In The Classroom
- Senior safety, Tyler Bloyer represented UNC on the first team NCAA Division I District 7 coSIDA Academic All-District team. This is the second consecutive season Bloyer has made the team. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution and must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games this season.
