The Bears finished out their weekend in Omaha, going 0-2 overall
OMAHA, Neb. - Northern Colorado dropped its contest to the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks on Sunday, 1-0. This was the fifth loss this season for the Bears and marks the halfway point for the 2015 regular season.
"We knew it was going to be a tough four-game stretch, especially with three on the road," Coach Tim Barrera commented. "That considered, we played pretty well. We certainly created enough chances to win - we just couldn't find the back of the net."
UNC made the first four shots of the game, all within the first 13 minutes of play, and the Bear defense managed to hold off the Omaha squad from making any attempts for nearly 22 minutes.
The team would add another three shots in the remaining minutes of play, while goalkeeper Madeline Burdick would tack on three saves to her season total, preventing any momentum by the Mavericks. Northern Colorado also had the only corner kicks of the period with three.
Despite shot on goal attempts by Ambree Bellin, Adrienne Jordan, and Carolyn Cox, the score would remain at 0-0 going into halftime.
The Bears picked up another three corner kicks in the second period, along with six more shots, four of which came on goal attempts from Shanlie Anderson and Mariel Gutierrez. Unfortunately, they were not able to capitalize on these shot attempts and time expired in the half, the score remaining at 0-0.
As the game headed into overtime, the Bears fought hard to end the game, with a narrowly saved shot coming from Essence Ortiz-Laneir. In the Mavericks lone shot of the overtime period, Chelsi Rohloff got her own rebound, scoring for the Omaha and ending the game after 97 minutes of play.
Overall, UNC outshot the Mavericks 14-10, 10-7 on goal, and had six corner kicks to their three.
"It was a tough weekened, but it's all about preparing us for conference games and dealing with the adverse conditions of being on the road. I think we'll learn from this stretch and move on - now our focus goes to Montana, who are defending regular season champs."
Northern Colorado returns to action next weekend, Sept. 27th at 1:00PM MT, when they face the Montana Grizzlies at Jackson Field.Â
