The UNC Bears were shut out Friday night after a road game against Creighton
GREELEY, Colo. – UNC Soccer fell to the Creighton Blue Jays on Friday night in a 3-0 shutout. Creighton outshot the Bears 24-7, with 16 shots on goals to the UNC three.
In the first half, the Bears only managed four shots against the Blue Jays, but three of those came on goal, including a 6th minute shot by Brooke Braden. The Blue Jays, despite having eight shots in the period, were unable to get by goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff, as she made saves on all of their shots on goal through the 45 minutes of play.
Neither side would end up making a scoring play, sending the game into halftime at 0-0.
"I thought we played pretty well in the first half," head coach Tim Barrera said. "I think playing Tuesday night caught up with us once we got into the second half, though. When you're on the road, you really have to bring that energy and we just didn't have it."
The second half did not prove any more successful for the Bears, as they only tallied three more shots with one on goal throughout the rest of the game. Creighton, on the other hand, doubled their shots from the first half, tacking on 16 by the time the game was over.
Nine minutes into the second half, Creighton put their first point on the board after a cross-shot by Lauren Sullivan. Sullivan would score another goal for the Jays 12 minutes later, followed another 12 minutes later by the third and final goal of the game for the Creighton squad.
Considering the three goals and 12 total shots on goal for the Blue Jays, Ruff had a standout game in goal for the Bears, adding on nine saves to her career total, the best of all five games she's played this season.
Various underclassmen had success throughout the game as well, as the four UNC shots on goal came by either freshman Mariel Gutierrez or sophomores Brooke Braden and Carolyn Cox.
"It's hard being on the road, but we have to step up and play even when we're tired. Now we'll rest up as much as we can and get ready for our game against Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday."
The Bears will remain in Omaha to prepare for their Sunday morning game against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Kick-off is 11:00AM MT and will be available to follow via live stats and live video stream.
