Northern Colorado defeated the Cowgirls in a Tuesday night matchup in Cheyenne, Wyoming
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado Women's Soccer defeated the Wyoming Cowgirls on Tuesday, 3-1. The game marks the first time this season that the Bears have scored three goals in one game, and the ninth time the team has defeated the Cowgirls in the 13 game series.
"It's always a big game for us when we play Wyoming," head coach Tim Barrera said. "We started playing for a trophy years ago so it's great to win a trophy and keep that at home. Midweek games are tough, especially when you lose on Sunday, but we got the girls motivated and ready to play."
Freshman Mariel Gutierrez got things going for the Bears, taking their first and second shots of the game (first and 17th minutes, both going wide).
Despite the Bears' quick offensive push, the Cowgirls would get on the board with their lone goal of the game after a 14th minute scoring shot by Laurel Ramer.
The Bears responded quickly, tying the game at 1-1 with junior Paige Morris' first goal of the season, assisted by redshirt senior Ambree Bellin.
Kassy Castillo got her second goal of the season only three minutes later, assisted by Bellin and Jacqui Pulley.
The Cowgirls would shoot six more times in the half, including three that were saved by Burdick, but the Bears' defense held strong, keeping their lead at 2-1 going into halftime.
In the second period, Wyoming fired off six shots before the Bears' took their first of the half after nearly 25 minutes of play.
Another Northern Colorado player got their first goal of the season in a 79th minute goal by Brooke Braden off of a free kick.
The UNC defense yet again managed to prevent Wyoming from scoring, keeping the lead at 3-1 for the remainder of the game to tack on a win for the Bears' 2015 season. Burdick picked up nine saves on the game, her most in any game of her collegiate career.
Northern Colorado had only 12 shots throughout the game, compared to the Cowgirls' 18, and landed seven on goal compared to 10 by Wyoming.
"We had a really big crowd and great environment here in Cheyenne – Wyoming did a great job of promoting the event," Barrera expressed. "It was a really back and forth game, but we took advantage of some set pieces and scored a couple of good goals for the win. It's definitely something for us to be proud of and build upon."
The Bears have another quick turnaround, leaving for Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday morning to prepare for a Friday night matchup against the Creighton Blue Jays and a Sunday afternoon game against Nebraska-Omaha. Following this weekend's matches, the team will return to Greeley to begin Big Sky Conference play, starting with the Montana Grizzlies.
