CHANDLER, Ariz. – After day one of the Big Sky Championship at the Ocotillo Golf Resort the Northern Colorado women's golf team sits just five strokes off the lead in fifth place.
The Bears put together a 303 (+15 overall) as a team after the first 18 holes of play and are just two strokes behind Idaho and Northern Arizona, four strokes from Southern Utah, and five away from Sacramento State, the current leader.
"It was nice to see the girls play solid and stay in control coming down the back nine today," said head coach Stephen Bidne. "There's a lot of golf left to play, but we put ourselves in a good position after the first round."
UNC remains in the hunt due to a solid -1 under round from junior Amanda Myers.
Myers holed 15 pars, two birdies, and just one bogey en route to a 71. For twelve straight holes she scored par or better.
The junior is just three strokes off the individual leader, Southern Utah's Taylor Viquelia (-4 overall). She sits solely in second place.
"Amanda was able to find a groove early, and it was fun to see her post an under par round with tough pin locations," said Bidne.
Fellow junior Nicole Okada had the second best day for Northern Colorado. Okada carded a 76 (+4 overall) in her first round of the Championship.
Okada had a difficult front nine, recording two double bogeys and a bogey to be +5 over heading into the turn. She got her game back on track in the final stretch, shooting -1 under to finish the final nine.
Okada is in a six-way tie for 17th overall.
Freshman Christina Ferreira and sophomore Baile Winslow fired identical rounds of 78 (+6) on Sunday.
Winslow had the best front nine marking seven pars and two bogeys, going +2 over, while Ferreira had a minor slip of back-to-back bogeys on holes 8 and 9 to finish +3 over heading into the back section.
Ferreira also ended the back nine at +3 over, while Winslow finished +4 over on the last nine holes.
Both are tied for 30th overall.
Sophomore Kala Keltz ended day one of the League Championship for UNC. Keltz had a difficult day, finishing +17 over (89). Back-to-back triple bogeys on the final two holes of the front nine made Keltz +12 over at the turn.
The sophomore showed vast improvement shaving seven strokes on her back nine score, shooting +5 over. She is tied for 57th.
"We need to forget about today though, and go out there tomorrow with a clean slate and post another good round," said Bidne. "If we continue to play smart and get some more putts to drop, we'll be right in it come Tuesday afternoon."
The Big Sky Championship continues on Monday, April 20 with round two tee times starting at 7:15 a.m. (GMT).
