GREELEY, Colo.—The Northern Colorado men's tennis team earned a weekend split in Big Sky play, defeating Portland State 4-3 and falling to Montana 5-2.
The Bears (4-8, 1-4 Big Sky) win against PSU (5-5, 2-3 Big Sky) snapped a three match losing streak and gave the team its first Big Sky win of the season.
"The team showed some inspiring fight today, earning this win and ending our recent slide," head coach Mike Phillips said.
UNC had to come from behind to earn the win on Saturday against the Vikings after dropping the doubles point. The Bears number one thru four singles players came up big though, all winning their matches to secure the win.
Ben Gendron (Flower Mound, Texas) and Mitchel Knight (Tulsa, Okla.) won both of their singles matches over the weekend.
Gendron won both in straight sets going 6-2, 7-5 against Montana and 7-6, 6-4 over Portland State. Overall for the season he is now 7-5 in number one singles including 3-2 in conference play.
Knight's weekend wasn't as easy as Gendron's, but he battled it out in the number three singles coming from behind to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Montana. Against PSU he won in straight sets 7-6, 6-1.
In the Montana (2-4, 2-1 Big Sky) match on Friday, Gendron and Knight were the Bears two points winning their singles matches.
"The guys fought well against a very deep Montana team," Phillips said. "We were able to learn from the mistakes in that match to come back and earn the win Saturday."
Northern Colorado will look to build of its win on Saturday when they hit the road for three matches, starting on March 15 at UC Davis.
