GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado wrestling team heads to St. Louis, Missouri tomorrow, March 17, to participate in the 2015 NCAA National Wrestling Championships. The Bears will bring sophomore Trey Andrews (125-lbs), senior Mitchell Polkowske (165-lbs) and junior Trent Noon (197-lbs) to the competition who all received automatic bids to the completion.
"Overall this year has been a great success," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "I don't value that off from our results, but just on what our guys have been able to accomplish on an everyday basis. They have completely, one hundred percent, bought in to what we are trying to do here and they see the value in it. For our guys going to the national tournament, the work is not done yet and we expect them to have their best performances of the year this weekend. For those who came up just short, I have been very happy to see their passion continue to grow and their excitement to build this summer is better than it has ever been."
Trey Andrews will face junior #7 Eddie Klimarain (Oklahoma State) his first round match who is a three time NCAA qualifier and has posted a spectacular 20-5 record on the year.
"Trey Andrews has had a bit of a roller coaster year," said Nickerson. " His potential is through the roof and we expect him to turn it all on this weekend."
Looking to end his senior year as an All-American is Mitchell Polkowske who drew #10 Jim Wilson from Stanford. Polkowske has posted a 21-7 record on the year and Wilson will be a tough test, currently sitting 30-4 on the year.
"Mitchell Polkowske did a great job this year and had his best performance of the season when it mattered," said Nickerson. "Mitchell is going into his last National Championships at his peak and we feel very good about where he is at in the bracket."
The last Bear looking to take the big stage by storm is junior transfer Trent Noon. Noon will take on Jace Bennett of Cornell, where Coach Nickerson is an alumni. After wrestling 47 matches on the year Bennett has won 37 of them.
"Trent Noon has also shown some inconsistency throughout the year, however, turned it on when it mattered most at the conference tournament," said Nickerson. "Trent enters his first national tournament with a lot of confidence and the hunger for more. He is primed to make a deep run in the tournament."
ESPN will provide comprehensive coverage of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis from March 19-21. For the second consecutive year, all six sessions will be televised and every match carried on ESPN3 throughout the entire three-day competition.
