Northern Colorado women's basketball set a program record for shooting in an 88-67 victory over Northern Arizona Saturday night
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—The Northern Colorado (17-11, 11-6 Big Sky) women's basketball team extended its win streak to seven games on Saturday night at Northern Arizona (12-15, 8-8 Big Sky), winning 88-67.
The Bears scorched the nets shooting 63.2 percent. It was the team's best shooting percentage of the season and broke the program's Division I record for field goal percentage in a game. The previous record had been 58.7 percent against Idaho State in 2011.
"We played very well tonight, shooting the ball well and taking advantage of our opportunities," head coach Kamie Ethridge said. "We have been playing really well offensively lately and it is showing. Our ball movement has been great."
UNC had four players finish in double figures, led by D'shara Strange's (Fountain, Colo.) 27 points. She shot 13-21 from the field with nine rebounds and a career-high tying eight assists.
Kyleigh Hiser (Laramie, Wyo.) was the team's second leading scorer with 19 points. Fifteen of the 19 points came off of five made 3-pointers.
Stephanie Lee (14) and Kourteney Zadina (11) were the two other Bears with double digit points.
Good ball movement once again led to UNC's great offensive numbers. For the fourth consecutive game Northern Colorado recorded at least 20 assists, finishing tonight with exactly 20.
"We are moving the ball and shooting well," Strange said. "We still have some fine tuning to do such as taking care of the ball, but we are feeling confident right now."
The Bears and 'Jacks were in a close battle for the first 13 and a half minutes of the game with UNC up by one, 25-24. From that point on UNC closed the first half on a 15-2 run, going to the locker room up by a score of, 40-26.
The run was led by eight points from Hiser, including two of her five made threes. On the defensive side of the court, UNC held NAU to 1-7 shooting during the stretch and they also missed all four free throws attempted during the time.
Northern Colorado continued right from where it left off in the second half, extending the lead all the way to 30 with just a little under six minutes remaining in the game.
NAU was unable to cut the Bears lead below 20 for the rest of the night as the team finished out its 21 point victory.
UNC will close out its regular season schedule next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MST when they face North Dakota on the road.
