UNC won its third straight road match Saturday night

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Northern Colorado volleyball played the maximum 10 sets over two days in Montana, picking up its third straight five set road victory Saturday night. This time it was against Montana State (25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10).

"It was the same story, just a different opponent for us tonight. Our level of play just isn't at the level we want it to be this late in the season," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We found a way to win though again, which is something that good teams do at this time of the year."

The match featured 14 ties and eight lead changes, although was played even closer than the numbers indicate.

On the night five different players finished with double digit kills. Timarie Nymyer and Kortney Lockey led the team with 14 kills each, while Kim Weissmann had a season high 13. Both Weissmann and Lockey also added in five digs a piece.

"Kim Weissmann came up big and was a good match up for us tonight, while Timarie was big for us as we set her in key moments and came through in the clutch for us," said Oates.

Middle blockers Alex Klohen and Emily O'Neil were the two other Bears with double digit kills with 10 each. They both finished with three total blocks on the night as well to the lead the team.

With the strong offensive output, setter Ashley Guthrie gathered up plenty of assists. She broke her just previously set career high in the category with 62 tonight.

Northern Colorado got out to a solid start in the match taking the first set 25-19, and had a late 23-20 lead in the second set, before MSU closed the set on a 7-2 run evening the match at one set each.

Montana carried the momentum with them into the third set starting off on a 6-0 run. UNC fought back in the set, but it was just too big of a deficit to overcome as the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 third set victory.

The teams once again battled back and forth in the fourth set, ending up tied at 21 late when UNC closed out on a 4-2 run forcing the decisive fifth set.

In that set the teams exchanged points earlier on before UNC went on a 5-0 run that sealed the match for the team and secured the victory.

"I liked how our team battled through adversity tonight and found a way to win," Oates said about the team's come from behind victory.

Two Bears finished the night with double figure digs in senior Meagan Garcia (25) and sophomore Michaela Nelson (12).

"We will be looking to be better next week to close out the regular season," Oates said. "I am pleased to see us pick up three straight five set road wins."

Northern Colorado now returns home for its final two matches of the regular season when they host Eastern Washington on Nov. 12 and Idaho on Nov. 14, before heading to the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
