@UNCBearsWBB Suffers First Loss of the Year at Colorado
11/19/2015 10:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BOULDER, Colo. – Northern Colorado (2-1) took on in-state foe Colorado (2-0) on Thursday night inside Coors Event Center.
CU jumped out to a 21 point lead in the first two quarters of play and never looked back taking the matchup, 63-41.
After scoring 101 points just three days earlier, UNC posted a season-low 41 against a CU team that featured five girls 6'2" or taller. The Bears had a difficult time matching up down low with the Buffs and were out rebounded in the game, 51-30.
Poor shooting aided in the 22-point loss as Northern Colorado walked off the court with a final line of 14-for-62 (22.6%) from the field and 4-for-28 (14.3%) from 25 feet, or further.
"They are a really hard working team and were obviously just a whole lot bigger than we are and that just bothered us," Ethridge said on the loss. "I tried to get us to move the ball a little better in the second half and I think we did a little bit of that, but it (the game) sure showed what we don't know and what bothered us."
Senior post, Rebecca Howell led the team with nine points on the night, going 4-of-10 from the floor and 1-for-1 from three-point range.
Both senior and sophomore guards, Kyleigh Hiser and Savannah Scott chipped in eight apiece.
UNC had trouble finding the net in the early goings of the game, scoring just seven points in the first quarter and shooting just 2-for-16 from the floor and 0-for-7 from beyond the Arc.
CU took advantage of the Bears' scoring drought, going on a 17-4 run that eclipsed close to eight minutes of play, beginning at the end of the first quarter and going to the 3:03 mark in the second period.
"It's hard to like a lot about this game, it really is, but overall I'm happy with everything that we did in the first half," Ethridge added. "I think we played much harder and much smarter in the second half, our execution just wasn't there the entire game and we just looked like we were a little bit of a panicked team."
UNC got some offense going late in the second quarter after a junior guard, Katie Longwell three-ball and one make from the line from freshman forward Danielle Noble.
After it was all said and done, UNC was 5-of-32 (15.6%) in the first half from the field and just 1-of-16 (6.3%) from downtown. Both percentages were halftime lows for the team on the young season.
The Bears went into the locker room down 36-15.
"You know I feel good about this group – I know they'll come in hungry tomorrow and will look to get better and I know we will get better," Ethridge said. "It's just hard to take (the loss), but it's early so you do take it, and you have to take it and get better from it and all that and can't get down over one game especially in such a long season."
The cold wave finally made its way to the Buffs, as they scored just one point for over a four minute stretch late in the third quarter, opening the door for the team from Greeley.
Senior guard, Kyleigh Hiser took advantage of the situation nailing back-to-back three-pointers and pulling the Bears within 13 (43-30) points after being down by 21earlier in the quarter.
UNC hung around in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but again CU's height advantage took a toll on the Bears.
The Buffs went on a 16-7 run midway through the fourth, with 13 of those points coming from down low on the post, which was more than enough to ensure the win.
The women's team now has a quick turnaround yet again, hosting St. Mary's this Sunday, Nov. 22 at 6:00 p.m. inside Bank of Colorado Arena.
"They're a completely different team than Colorado," Ethridge said about the team's next opponent. "They're a little bit quicker and they'll get out and run a little bit more, so it'll be a good matchup with our guards."
