@UNCBEARSFB Handed Loss at North Dakota, 45-14.
11/14/2015 3:25:00 PM | Football
UNC was unable to spoil UND's Senior Day, as the Bears offense was no match for a stout North Dakota defensive, falling 45-14.
UNC remains winless in Grand Forks since making the move to FCS, and hasn't left the Roughrider state with a W, since 1998 when both teams competed in the NCC.
It was also the first time since the 2012 season that the Bears had been held scoreless for an entire 60 minutes, the last coming against Utah, falling 41-0 in Salt Lake City.
Northern Colorado mustered just 275 total offensive yards in the loss and head coach Earnest Collins Jr. moves to 0-8 all-time in dome games.
Redshirt freshman Jacob Knipp had another rough game indoors. Knipp threw three interceptions and coughed up two fumbles, one of them going the other way for a touchdown inside the Alerus Center, ending his day 13-22-3 for 114 yards.
Senior QB Jon Newsom relieved Knipp of his duties in the fourth quarter and put together the team's only two scoring drives of the game.
"My hat's off to North Dakota. They came out and executed their game plan and we had a hard time adjusting to what they were doing," Collins said. "I liked how we continued to fight even when the game was out of reach, our kids didn't quit on us."
Another bright spot of the game came in the form of a milestone.
Junior safety Taylor Risner reached 100 tackles on the season, making him just the third player in D1 history to achieve the mark and the first since the 2013 season when Clarence Bumpas ended with 106. Risner forced nine stops (4 Solo, 5 assisted) and now has 101 tackles with one game to go.
UND got things going early and it never stopped, scoring five touchdowns in the first half, three of them on runs of 49, 81 and 19 yards.
"Their back is a tremendous athlete and we weren't finishing on tackles, allowing him to break free on those big plays," Collins added. "We talked about it all week how they were going to run the ball, but it's hard to simulate that type of play in practice."
It was more of the same in the second half, as North Dakota reached the end zone one more time and put a field goal through the uprights.
In total, the Bears D gave up 558 total yards to UND, including 408 yards rushing, which is the most yards they allowed an opponent since 2014 when Idaho State ran for 348 yards and the first time since 2007 they have allowed over 400 yards on the ground.
Northern Colorado didn't get on the scoreboard until the early goings of the fourth quarter. UNC drove the ball 74 yards in seven plays under Newsom and capped the series off with a four yard punch-in from redshirt sophomore running back, Anthony Davis for his third trip to pay dirt this season.
The second TD of the game came from Newsom himself, rumbling in from seven yards out, making it a 45-14 final score.
Newsom ended his 15:00 minutes with 30 yards rushing and 6-of-7 passing for 56 yards.
"Jon [Newsom] played well for us in the final quarter," Collins said. "He stepped in and ran the offense seamlessly, which is what you want to see from a back up, so if those situations ever arise, there's not a big difference in who is taking the snaps. He made some great decisions with the ball and took some shots and still moved us."
Northern Colorado now heads back to Greeley for its final game of the season, taking on Abilene Christian next Saturday, Nov. 21 at 12:00 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for the Bears.
