The Bears defeated Idaho State Friday night, 3-0
GREELEY - The UNC Bears defeated the Idaho State Bengals Friday night, 3-0, in their second Big Sky Conference game of the 2015 seasons. This was the team's fourth shutout of the season, third time scoring three goals in one game, and sixth win over the Bengals since 2005.
Â
After an hour-long delay before kick-off due to lightning in the area, the game got off to a fairly slow start. The Bears and Bengals each had one shot apiece in the first ten minutes, neither one on goal.
Â
A yellow card on Ambree Bellin in the twelfth minute, however, seemed to kick the teams into high gear, pushing a back and forth battle that would last the remainder of the half.
Â
Both teams took seven shots total in the first period, both landing three on goal, but neither could capitalize, sending the game into halftime tied at 0-0. In the first half alone, Idaho State took four corner kicks and had six fouls to UNC's three.
Â
In the second half, the Bears came out incredibly strong both defensively and offensively. The Bears defense made sure that the Bengals were only able to add three shots to the seven they accrued in the first half, without adding a single shot on goal.
Â
Sydney Schroeder got the first points up on the board for Northern Colorado, landing her fourth goal of the season after an assist by Essence Ortiz-Laneir in the 61st minute of play.
Â
Schroeder would attempt another shot on goal three minutes later, but would not quite get it by the Bengal goalkeeper. Her attempt would, however, be rebounded by Shanlie Anderson for the Bears' second goal of the game. The goal would be Anderson's first of the season.
Â
Idaho State switched out its goalie in the 69th minute, hoping to slow down the onslaught of Bear goal attempts, but a goal would glide past her in the 75th minute after junior Stephanie Scarcello took her first collegiate shot (on goal) and scored, improving the UNC lead to 3-0.
Â
There would be no other shots from either side after the 77th minute, securing the Bear's win to move them to 2-0-0 in Big Sky play.
Â
Overall, the Bears had 17 shots with 11 on goal, compared to Idaho State's 10 shots with three on goal.
Â
Northern Colorado remains at home for another Big Sky game this Sunday, Oct. 4th, for a 1PM MT game against the Weber State Wildcats. The Wildcats are currently 1-2-0 in Big Sky play after a Friday night win over North Dakota in overtime, 3-2.
