GREELEY, Colo. - On an evening that was built for excitement the Northern Colorado Bears were able to end the night on a high note with two back-to-back last second wins. Trent Noon and Brian Macchione won their matches in the last twenty seconds, but the Bears would still fall 40-6 to Oregon State.
Â
"I am a coach and I am always optimistic," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "Tonight was a good opportunity to learn from and I know our team will continue to move forward and get better."
The evening started out with the USA vs. World All-Stars meet going down to the final match between Ryan Mango (USA) and Almat Kebispayev (World All-Stars) with Kebispayev coming out on top by fall in the 3:00 minute. USA would fall 20-16.
The night would be capped off by a pair of Bears looking to save their team from a shutout.
Noon would take the mat against Cody Crawford (Oregon State) who was carrying an overall record of 22-6 and was ranked this week by the NCAA 31st in the 197 weight class. The first period would end with no points scored, with Crawford scoring first in the second round by escapes of a Noon deferral.
To begin the third round, Noon would tie things up at one apiece by an escape. Noon would decide to make the final attack, with :45 seconds left. He would be rewarded with his aggressiveness getting a takedown, with :24 seconds left propelling to victory by a score of, 3-1.
With the win, Noon moves to 14-10 on the year.
In the final match of the night Macchione would step into the circle against a very aggressive Nate Keeve (Oregon State) who came into the match with a 15-12 record.
The match would enter into the final :30 second tied at one apiece with both wrestlers scoring off escapes. Macchione would finally get a leg of Keeve pulling him to the ground, winning the match in the .24 second, 3-1.
Â
"We need to get to our offense this week to prepare for the rest of the year," said Nickerson. "If we can continue to try and score and work on those areas, I like our chances against."
The Bears will look to recover from this slump when they host, Grand Canyon University on January 30, at 7:00 p.m.
