MISSOULA, Mont.-The Northern Colorado women's soccer team played in their final road conference match of the year taking on Montana. The Griz had already clinched as the regular season conference champions heading into today's match and the Bears needed a win to get one of the top seeds in the conference tournament.
The first period of the match turned out to be a defensive battle for both squads. Montana held UNC to only one shot in the entire period. That shot for the Bears would come in the 6th minute, when Essence Ortiz-Lanier fired one off, just missing high of the cross bar.
The Griz had a stronger offensive half, getting six shots off and landing two on-goal. Montana also earned the only corner kick that was taken in the first half. UM was led by Hallie Widner and Mackenzie Akins who both had six shots on the game.
Entering halftime both teams would be notched in a, 0-0 tie.
"It was a windy day with a soft field and both teams were just trying to figure out how to play against each other," said head coach Tim Barrera. "Each team played very evenly, with no good opportunity's either way."
In the second half the Bears came out more aggressive on offense, getting two corner kicks off in the first 8 minutes. UNC would also tighten up its defense, keeping Montana from taking their first shot of the half in the 63rd minute.
Montana also stepped up on defense the rest of the half, only allowing the Bears to four shots and three corner kicks. UNC had their best opportunity of the night in the 77th minute when Rebecca Lancia took a nice shot, only to bounce off the post, eventually being scooped up by the keeper.
Northern Colorado continued to hold their ground until the 82nd minute, when Widner hit the game-winner into the back of the net off an Akins assist. Montana would hold their ground the rest of the match, only giving the Bears one last opportunity in the 84th minute, when senior forward, Juliana Grover's shot was on target, but saved by the Montana keeper
.
Montana would take the match, 1-0 giving them the top spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament.
The Bears will return to the field on Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m. against North Dakota. Friday will also be senior night, honoring Juliana Grover and Ambree Bellin for their fantastic Bear careers.
"This Friday is a must win game for our team, " Barrera said. "Anything less than a win would most likely mean our season is over and we owe it to these seniors to get it done."
