GREELEY, Colo.- The Northern Colorado Bears women's soccer team took on North Dakota in the Bears final home match. Before the game, senior Juliana Grover and Ambree Bellin were honored for their successful UNC career. The match was a must win for the Bears.
"The big thing today is we qualified for the tournament and that is one of our goals," said head coach Tim Barrera. "We were able to play a lot more girls tonight, and really gave some good experience to them moving forward."
UNC would come out extremely aggressive on offense being led by Essenc Ortiz-Lanier. Ortiz-Lanier would fire off one shot and two corners in the first five minutes of the match. UNC sophomore duos, Kassy Castillo and Paige Morris would also get off a shot in the first five minutes.
The Bears would continue their offensive dominance, when Castillo fed Morris with a really nice ball in the 30th minute, drilling the ball into the back of the net, inking her fourth goal on the year. UNC would strike again seven minutes later, when Grover found Rebecca Lancia, giving the Bears the 2-0 lead in the half.
North Dakota would get their best opportunity with a minute remaining in the half when UND sophomore Kirsten Olson beat the Bears defense. Olson would go one-on-one with Katlin Ruff, taking a shot to the bottom left of the goal, only to be saved by a diving Ruff.
The Bears led the half with nine shots and five corners. UND would only get off four shots and no corners. Castillo led the half with three shots landing two on-goal.
In the second half senior Juliana Grover capped off an excellent career with two goals. Her first goal came in the 47thminute when she took it herself, ripping it from the 18. She would get her second goal eight minutes later, when UND committed a hand ball in the box giving Grover the PK opportunity, giving her 7 goals on the season.
"Tonight meant a lot to me because our team one," said Grover. "We have to take this confidence with us, so we have a shot to win the whole thing."
UNC would strike for the fifth time on the night in the 57th minute, from Ortiz-Lanier. Ortiz-Lanier found herself on the receiving end of a goalie batted ball, lacing her second goal of the night in the back of the net. The evening wasn't over for the Bears, because in the 73rd minute, freshman Brooke Braden would get her second goal on the season. Braden received the ball off a UNC corner kick, only to be punched out to the 18 yard box. Braden found herself all alone scoring for the goal.
The Bears would end the match winning in dominate fashion, 6-0.
"We came out with the mentality to get a shutout and we got one," said Adrienne Jordan "We have to take that mentality forward to the conference tournament."
With this win, the Bears will matchup against Idaho State in the first round of Big SKy play, The tournament will be held by Montana who finished 8-0-2 in conference play.
