CHENEY, Wash.-The Northern Colorado women's soccer team took the field Friday, Oct. 24 against a very good Big Sky opponent in Eastern Washington. Both teams came into the match with a lot to gain from a win, but it would be all Bears from the start. UNC came out on top, 1-0 with senior, Juliana Grover scoring the game's lone goal.
"I think we really stepped up and played some great defense in the second half," said head coach Tim Barrera. "After Juliana's goal in the first half, I think the girls knew they needed to play some excellent defense to win the game."
The Bears attempted to get on the board quickly off a corner kick in the first minute of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net. The next ten minutes of the match was very even, until in the 11th minute, when Eagles' forward Chloe Williams fired off a shot, but sophomore keeper, Kaitlin Ruff came up with the stop, adding to her already impressive save total on the year. Williams continued to pressure UNC's back line in the first period, getting off four of Eastern Washington's six shots in the half.
The Bears struck first in the 36th minute when junior, Adrienne Jordan sent Grover a through-ball, giving the Northern Colorado, the 1-0 lead. The Bears ended the half cracking off five shots, landing four on-goal.
In the beginning of the second period, the Eagles made adjustments and went on the attack. In the first five minutes of the period EWU got off five shots, landing three on-goal. After Eastern Washington's pressure, UNC settled down and in the next ten minutes of action the Bears landed six shots on the Eagles defense.
The defense stepped up and locked down the back field, not giving the Eagles a single chance to get back in the game. UNC held EWU to one shot in the final ten minutes of the period giving them the, 1-0 win. The Bears finished the match with 13 shots, landing six on-goal.
Ruff displayed her talents between the posts, blocking six shots moving her save total to 111 on the season.
The women's soccer team looks to stay hot traveling to Montana on Sunday taking on the Griz who have clinched the regular season Big Sky title. The Bears enter the match with a conference record of 4-3-1. With a win on Sunday and a little help, UNC could clinch the number two seed in the Big Sky tournament. Kickoff from Missoula is in the books for Noon.
"We play an excellent team this Sunday in Montana," Barrera said. "We'll have to come off short rest, but I think the girls are up for the challenge."
