Soccer Drops Close Match Against Sac. State, 1-0

The Bears lost another heartbreaker in the final minutes of the match, giving up the game-winning goal against the Hornets.

GREELEY, Colo.- The Northern Colorado women's soccer team lost another heartbreaker on Sunday to Sacramento state, 1-0. The Bears move to 8-7-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in Big Sky play.

In the first period of action UNC came out looking to get the early lead. In the 7th minute of the match the Bears would get there first shot of the game by sophomore, Sidney Schroeder who put it just high. Schroeder finished  the match with four shots landing one on-goal.

Four minutes later freshman, Jacqui Pulley would try and get her second goal on the weekend, but the shot was saved by the SSU keeper.

Both teams would play the period very evenly from there on out, until the 42nd minute, when the Hornets' Kylee Smith, put back-to-back shots on goal, only to be saved by sophomore goalkeeper, Katlin Ruff. Ruff had eight saves in the game, giving her 105 on the season, tying her for tenth all-time in school history.Â

The period would end in a 0-0 tie with UNC taking 5 shots and landing two on-goal and SSU taking 7 shots, landing four on-goal.

"Both teams were just feeling each other out in the first half," said head coach Tim Barrera. "I feel like our girls did a great job coming out at halftime after playing back-to-back overtime games."

In the beginning of the second period the Hornets attempted to strike first. In the first five minutes of the period Sacramento state fired off two shots and earning a corner kick. The Bears answered the shots in the 56th minute taking two corner kicks. Junior Adrienne Jordan cracked off a nice shot of frame on the second corner, but again Sacramento State made the save.

The rest of the half went back and forth until the 86th minute when the Hornets found the back of the net. Sophomore Adaurie Dayak scored off a pass from freshman Chelsea Arnold.

The Bears tried to rally in the final moments of the game serving up a corner kick in the 88th minute and taking two shots in the 88th and 89th minute of the match, but it wasn't enough as the Bears dropped the contest, 1-0.

"For us we just have to look ahead to the next game" said Barrera. "We go on the road which is always difficult, but our girls will be ready to play."

The women's soccer team will look to get back on track when they head to Eastern Washington Friday, Oct. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
